NLC - music thingamabob....

Post by Rich H » Tue Jan 15, 2013 11:54 pm

Hey all,

Need a bit of help finding an MP3 thing as a present.
I need to find a simple to use and <£50 player
I used to be simple...now it's a nightmare of options!

Only stipulation is not apple - Itunes doesn't like Ubuntu
An expandable SD cart type option would be nice too.

A combination of Apple and smartphones have kind of killed the budget MP3 player market. For a player that didn't come out of a cracker, you're looking at £79 as an entry level from us. Lesser stuff just doesn't have a market now - why spend £40 on a feature limited MP3 player when the functionality is in your phone, and likely better sound quality than you'd get from a proper cheap MP3? At £79 we've got a Sony and a Cowon. Unfortunately, the Cowon doesn't like Ubuntu either, so you're left with the Sony - which is a nice little bit of kit for the money, but you're not getting expandable memory or anything. 8GB on board.

OK thanks, was looking for the budget end and wondering where they had all gone...

Looks like back to the drawing board...

What about a cheap android phone with micro SD card?

Maybe not the best as a gift though as it'll look like something it isn't.

Have you had a look at Sandisk's Sansa range of players.

Noticed this morning that a coleague had one sitting on his desk and speaking to him it would seem to fit the bill. He uses it for the FALC, Ogg Vorbis playback, not sure if that's inportant to you.

Looking at the range they seem to fall within your budget and are microSD card expandable.
Experience is something you get, just after you need it!!
