The Flying Scotsman - not just for Trainspotters

Post by campbell » Thu Mar 07, 2013 9:59 pm

Excellent documentary shown recently on BBC2.

As much about the evolution of our nation as the engine itself.

Catch it quick...not long left on iplayer

Thanks for the reminder, Campbell. I keep meaning to sit down and watch this, and keep forgetting.

Every chance I'll still not get round to it knowing me  :D

I liked the quote from the stoic driver before they went for the 100mph record "If we hit anything, we'll hit it hard..."

Enjoyed that!

One highlight was the brief glimpse of the artist's wonderful portrait on Forth Bridge. Sad to see it, once again, under restoration but at least one day she'll be seen again in full glory.

Remember my first ever model train was Hornby's Flying Scotsman set :)

My first Hornby was in fact a 60s stylee "Hymek" goods train outfit, with standard oval plus single shunting siding - oh, those were the days!

Never had a Flying Scotsman (my brother might have?) but I *did* have a "Mallard" which scored the 126mph record run and spoiled the Flying Scotsman's fun a few years later!

Mallard holds a special place in my heart cos a great uncle of mine worked on it as a fireman post-war. He used to say it was "a swine if anything went wrong with it".
