He's got my Heuer at the moment for a service (only got around to sending it last week) - 8 week wait for the work, but impressed with the communication so far... :thumbsup

Has anyone on here got a Seiko Tuna? Any thoughts?

My daily beater, a Seiko BFK 200m Diver, has been brilliant over the past 5 years but it's time for a change and I also fancy modding the BFK (new bezel insert etc).

(Could use it for trips to Nandos, too? :P )

Got my hands on a Tuna at the weekend - Had been in discussion over a newish Marine Master model, but was offered a really good deal on a recently serviced Golden Tuna of 1980 vintage.

These watches were Seiko's take on the Omega Ploprof, from a time when quartz movements were £££ over automatic movements. The case is made from titanium in a monocoque design with a fancy gasket system, which avoids the need for a Helium escape valve, a la the Ploprof... (But does mean that to change the battery, you need to remove the crystal / movement!)

They also have a James Bond connection - Back when Seiko had the Bond franchise (before Rolex / Omega), Roger Moore wore the exact same model in "For your eyes only".

:cheers

A fine choice! Big fan. Not in the same league (pun intended) as a vintage Tuna, but my black Monster has naturally become my everyday desk-diver. I haven't worn anything else out the box for about 2 months I think...

Hello Chaps,

I was wondering if anyone had a little spare time to offer some advice?

Recently we had our first child and to celebrate his arrival I was considering buying a watch to mark the occasion. My ideal watch has always been a Submariner, however sadly this looks to be out of reach (although the assistants in Walkers in Dundee were excellent and allowed me to try one on and generally man handle one).

So, with the Rolex being out of reach I am about to turn my attention to another watch I have always liked; the Omega Speedmaster Professional.

Does anyone have any tips on the best high street shops / websites to visit in order to get the best deal? Is it simply a case of walking in and having a bit of a haggle? What would be a realistic purchase price? Is there a big difference in the Speedmaster model range? Is one model more sought after than another?

I'm just about to start my own research but I thought it was worth putting a post up here to see if anyone had any advice.

Thanks for any and all advice :)

-Mark.

The 'new' ceramic subs are silly money. If you want to buy new then you price yourself out of the market, but a pre- loved one can be had without box/papers for £2.7k ish, with those with full b&p for at least £3.3k.

I'm no Speedy expert but it seems they take a depreciation hit. For example the Apollo Soyuz special edition with real meteorite dial was circa £6k new and theres a minty one up for sale on tz-uk for £3850. £3750 gets you a 1957 50th Anni version with all the gear.

At the other end of the spectrum, full b&p, 2006 model 3570.50 is up for £1450. Gareth let a similar one go for circa £800  . New I think they're £2,880.

Forums -check tz-uk.com. Websites to get a feel for prices are blowers, watches.co.uk, etc.

If you want new, drop me a pm and I might be able to get you a deal from somewhere you've been already

Happy hunting :thumbsup

Thanks for the help Greg,

I can't get onto tz sales corner until I register and have 50 posts but £1450 is a lot better than the prices I managed to find last night, £800 sounds like a mega deal as well!

Out of interest, lets say I'd popped into a shop in my home town, how much could one realistically get off retail - 10%?

ETA: Spent most of lunch researching and the 3570.50 seems to be the Speedmaster to go for, the reduced auto looks good value and appeals to the budget (I also have skinny girl wrists) but I'd probably be after a pro in a couple of years so would be a false economy!

Are there any Raymond Weil experts on here? My mother wants me to sell hers but I'm not sure what it's worth and can't find much on-line>

Thanks :)

You probably already know of him, but Harold Ng (AKA yobokies - 'seikoboy' backwards) sells all sorts of cool stuff to mod your Monster... From straps to bezel replacements & new hands.

He's pretty reasonable, and seems good to deal with - I ordered a Ploprof-style strap from him, and he was very helpful.

I bought a pro from TZ for £1500 including box, papers and a spare strap in Feb last year. Easily my favourite watch and looks lovely on black leather. Manual wind isn't an issue as there is no date. I was worried about the "scratch-able" face of the Pro but it's been great and any scratches are easily taken out with polywatch. Most new watches seem to be hit by horrible depreciation, but the non moon watch speedies seem to be the ones that hang around the longest on sales corner with a rapidly reducing price. In comparison speedy pros at £1500 go very quickly indeed. Isn't a worry if you aren't ever planning to sell but it's nice to know.

In terms of new retail discount i got 12% off a Seamaster Aqua Terra for Mrs Donkey in Ernest Jones in Glasgow last year. Agreed it was the one she wanted and just said "I'm in Terminal 5 every fortnight and could get them much cheaper, anything you can do on the price?" People say you can get more but i was pleased with that.

Thanks Donkey, that's great information to have. Mind is set on a Speedy Pro, just need to find one at the right price.

Out of interest what year was yours? After some soul searching I have decided I can't justify an extra £1500 for a new one ;)

It's a 2005....but to be honest it was almost indistinguishable from new. Just start posting in the tz forum... Wait a few weeks (or is it months now?) and then buy buy buy!
