Work this one out......

Post by tut » Tue Jun 25, 2013 4:10 pm

George Taylor's crime in Fraserburgh came to light after he was stabbed by a man because of the offence.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard Taylor, 27, was assessed as posing a high risk of further sexual offending.

Taylor, who admitted raping the 14 year old girl in June 2011, was jailed for at least 32 months and received an Order for Lifelong Restriction (OLR).

Gary Martin, 32, was subsequently jailed for eight years for the attempted murder of Taylor.

Martin had told Taylor: "You know what you are. You know what you done."

If there is any chance of him telling them where Keith Bennett is buried, if he still remembers, they should let him have his wish of a change in prisons, he will then top himself, and we will save a fortune in keeping him alive, and maybe give closure to the boy's family.

Jeremy Bamber, who murdered five members of his family, has won an appeal to Strasbourg after claiming his “whole life” jail term was a breach of his human rights.

Another cost to the tax payer

Now that judges rather than politicians decide on sentencing in these cases I think the whole life thing should mean whole life. I also think we should let any such prisoner commit suicide (in a humane way, e.g. give them access to suitable drugs). After all, we don't really care what happens so long as they stay in prison forever, and as Tut says, it's cheaper for the tax payer if they die sooner rather than later.

For sentences where the Home Secretary has intervened in the past I think we should have a mandatory review by, e.g. currently serving high court judge or the court of appeal (and their equivalents in Scotland, obviously). I fear that often such interventions were politically motivated and that's not fair.

Cheers,
Robin

Pleased to see that 'cheeky chappie' Stuart Hall is to have his sentence reviewed after complaints that 15months was too lenient. He could get up to 10 years :thumbsup

15 months was a joke, I'm sure they were lenient because of his age.
Whether you're eighteen or eighty the sentencing should be the same - I guess he'll probably not get out of it alive if they increase it to ten years but that's his problem from commiting the crimes in the first place.

Bet he thought he'd got away with it.

Hall's offences were in the 60's to 80's so he has to be judged on what the sentences would have been then which were very lenient.

Even so it could have been 2 years for sexual assault, but 5 years for under 13's, the youngest was 9, so that excuse for a Judge that said 15 months was the max that he could give seemed to be talking bollocks, and if he had had any guts he would have over sentenced then have had to explain that. He could have also sentenced for each offence and have them run consecutively, so again no excuse not to give a long sentence.

I am not too bothered about him going to prison at all, because although he would have had to have been looking over his shoulder all the time, he will be reviled from now on in. Mark Bridger is a good example who murdered April Jones, he has just been knifed in prison, and that is probably only the start. The fear that he will have to go through every day is better than any sentence that the Court could pass out.

ps:- I used to be a Magistrate(not many people know that), but was stood down as deemed to have sentenced too severely some of the low lifes that came before me.
