Yeah well as usual everything in Tut Towers is ropey :-). You need to hook up your old Netgear DSL router and throw away that BT Home Hub - it is beyond belief that they manage to make a router where the BTWIFI/BTWIFI-with-FON somehow are always visible and force their way into computers that are already configured to use the proper home network.

For reference, if you want to get back to where you were, delete the remembered settings on your MBA for all three of the BT networks, log back into the admin page of the router, go to the wifi settings and find where the channel is, return to automatic channel setting - I left it on channel 11 - but given nobody else is in WiFi range of your house, I would be surprised if that made any difference (which channel you're on).

Your signal in the kitchen my improve if you put the router back on top of the cupboard.

I didn't change anything else.

Total joke.

IMO if you're on a v tight budget, the best bang for buck would be to buy a used 60-90Gb SSD and pop another 1Gb RAM in there (suggest buying new memory on ebay only or used only from a reputable dealer). A quick look on ebay shows you can get both a 60Gb SSD and 1Gb DIMM for £45

Then do a fresh install of XP by either downloading a Windows XP ISO or borrow a Windows XP disc but use your existing XP serial code which should be printed on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. (be sure to obtain the correct disc, i understand there are 3 versions: Retail, Volume and OEM - yours will probably be OEM)

XP on even a basic laptop equipped with an SSD and 2Gb will be fairly responsive and be enough for most day to day browsing needs/email/MS office use etc.
