PC help ! Internet explorer not working

Post by a4drk » Fri Mar 21, 2014 3:09 pm

Hello
My Internet explorer isn't working.
The broadband connection is fine - it's connected - just the browser isn't working
I used to have google chrome too - that worked ok
but I uninstalled it thinking I was going to reinstall Internet explorer 10 or 11
Now I can't get onto the Internet on the pc to download anything
I'm writing this on the iPad
Pc is 18 months old. It didn't come with a recovery disc. Just on a partitioned hard drive - which I can't access.
I don't want to wipe the pc as ill loose all my downloads.

Any ideas ?

David

IE is inbuilt to the OS

Can normally be found via Add / Remove features depending on OS.

In windows 7 look for "turn windows features on and off"

Tick IE10.

Files should be part of OS or possible prompt for disk.

Also, you can roll back to a restore point .... but lose anything you have done since more or less.

Hope that helps.

They don't come with disks - instead there is a recovery partition - if it's only your "downloads" that you are worried about, you can easily copy those off onto an external drive and then wipe and re-install (via the recovery partition). If you contact the manufacturer they will tell you what magic key sequence you need to press at power on to invoke the recovery partition.

Cheers,
Robin

P.S. Chances are you have a virus (probably a form of CryptoLocker ...). Buy a mac - probably easier in the long run.

Thanks robin.
Yeah, think I've picked up a virus.
Too many dodgy websites ......

I might have to off load it all onto portable HDDs

And don't use IE again. Firefox or Chrome only. I'm told this is now especially important for those luddites wishing to continue to run XP after it's desupported next month.

Bloody kicking myself.
just spent £60 on a 2TB external HDD
taking ages to transfer my files - then i had a brainwave.
I set up my old PC & downloaded Firefox for Windows 7 onto a memory stick.
plugged it into my new PC & opened it up.

works a treat.!

Suppose the HDD wont go a miss - good to have

Cheers

:D.

Has to be said that IE10 and IE11 much much better.

Also , from the perspective of managing 1000s of network client IE allows a network admin to define a policy and lock down most browser features if required.

Point being it has a place.

I don't doubt that. Particularly in a corporate, managed IT estate setting.

But when you have to manage your own IT...be it for business or for home...then I think some of the parameters can differ :-)
