Smart motorway ... gantries .. containing speed cameras ...

Post by scott_e » Mon Nov 07, 2016 1:16 pm

"There is just one stretch of smart motorway in Scotland - on the M9 - which saw the annual number of tickets issued increase from nine to 41 over the four years."

Dont use the M9 often, curious to know if these speed cameras referred too in the article are visible as you drive past ?

"Smart motorways are operated by Highways England, which uses overhead gantries - also containing speed cameras - to direct traffic into open lanes and change speed limits depending on the volume of traffic."

They hang off the back of the variable speed screens. Not sure all live but the casings are certainly there. Think there are some on M90 gantries too.

I didn't think there were any cameras on the back of the M9 gantries - as there are no lines painted on the road - the gantries only have the variable speed signs. Pretty sure if there were I'd have had a present through the door by now as I drive the road every day. I think there is a requirement to display a speed camera symbol on the front of the gantries if they have cameras - which from memory isn't displayed on the M9 ones.

The M90 definitely has some of them as you approach the FRB southbound - complete with lines on the road and speed camera signs on the front.

Maybe a misprint in the article M9/M90 - wouldn't be like the beeb now would it.....

They maybe mean the M9 Spur, which has cameras in two of the gantries coming from the bridge (still southbound) towards Newbridge. They're signed with lines on the road.

yeah as you come past Dunfermline, all the way to the M9 Spur, been there a couple of years the Gantries with the cameras are marked with camera signs on the gantries, I think they're only live when they display a speed limit although I'm not 100% on that...
