Murray motors

Post by twisted2fit » Sat Dec 31, 2016 1:48 am

Was thinking about selling my evora.. So called Murray lotus to see if they'd sell it on my behalf. I was advised they'd only sell cars that had been bought from them. Is this a new thing?

I think it's just part of their "unique" approach to customer service these days.

Some people are getting great service, others are getting the cold shoulder at best.

They bought my Evora but that was from them originally and they had full history. Cannot fault the sales side as the transaction saved me a lot off hassle at the time. So I am in the great service camp which doesn't help you I know.

Have you tried WillB or Johnyboy?

Have you tried David Hayton in Carlisle or even a conversation with Craig Moncrieff? Craig often has people asking him about cars - that's how I got my VX220, it was in a for a service with him, the owner mentioned he was wanting to sell, Craig knew I was looking, deal was done....

I'm in the camp of giving Murray the benefit of the doubt. They were superb when I bought my Evora off them 20 months ago and I'd like to think they'd sell me another Lotus in the future. It's easy to screw up a customer experience (and these days with social media et al every one then shouts about it everywhere) but the 99% of the time it is done right hardly gets a mention.

Last contact I had with them I was collecting my unfixed car.
I was advised by reception that no-one from the service dept was willing to talk to me.

Been a customer since '99.

I'm not in a hurry to sell..i was just putting the feelers out. I have had a lotus in one form or the other for about 7 years. Lotus Murray have always been very helpful...i was just a wee bit surprised by their attitude.
Thank you for the pointers everybody:) I will get in touch with the various folk mentioned here in the new year:)

I've recently bought my Cup250 from Murrays, traded in my Elise S during the transaction... I cannot fault the sales or service side from Murrays during the last year (or last 4yrs). I put them head to head with Bell & Covil from start to finish when looking to sell & buy during October and there was literally no difference in customer service, options, speed and final pricing etc. Both good and helpful. Overall Ian & Nick were excellent throughout and have continued to be post purchase. It was advantageous they new me, my car and needs to make discussion straight forward.

Regarding selling your car... yes Murrays have always chosen to buy cars that they have sold and know rather than cars they dont know if you are not intending to buy from them. I was informed about this when I first bought my Elise S 4yrs ago. Seems pretty logical to me given the minimal margins involved vs. taking new stock to sell vs. trading in to sell you another car. Most car dealers when I was living down in England had the same approach. So not unique to Murrays in any way.

I had three options to follow when looking to sell my Elise S (to buy a Cup250):

1. private advertise & sell
2. sell via Jonny or WillB
3. sell via Murrays or Bell & Covil, wait and hope
4. trade into Murrays or Bell & Covil

I initially did option 2, but that was pointless (offering less than dealer trade in) then decided to go option 1, but after multiple false leads over 2 weeks I decided on option 4 for convenience.

I get why MMC would only be interested in retailing a car where they know its provenance. There aren't many retailers that sell on behalf of customers as its their reputation at stake and they really don't gain much in the sale (some commission) vs the risk if the car isn't as it should be.
Evoras aren't easy to sell privately but as others have said speak to Craig to see if he knows of any potential customers.

Who did you speak to? Seems a slightly retarded way of working and Brandon has always been first class with me?

Brandon was totally straightforward and great to deal with when they sold my T72 Exige on my behalf. Admittedly I did buy it from them but nothing was said which led me to think that was relevant.

Brandon was on leave.. Didn't catch the guys name. Looking to upgrade and an evora 400 was on my shortlist.. Just wanted the cash to make it easier to deal.

Don't get why you didn't talk to them about a trade-in deal rather than cash sale, much more chance of a better deal &
would give you negotiation figures to go elsewhere too.

Didn't want to lead them on.. Just was having an initial conversation.. In hindsight I should have.. Was just a wee bit put off... Maybe I'm being too sensitive
