I am gutted reading this, must be one of the longest elise ownerships and another S1 will never be the same as owning yours for 18 years

At least you are ok and hopefully something else will come along that can start a new chapter in ownership.

Well if I did, would prob be the Edradour. One of the first meets I ever took the car to was at that very place. In Oct 99 IIRC.

I do think you need to find something related to focus on. While I didn't crash my S1, I had to let go of it and was much more gutted afterwards than I thought I'd be. I've been fortunate enough to replace it but I still hang on to the S1 in my mind. Maybe that's why I haven't changed my Avatar, and I haven't even got to clearing out parts yet. The new car is different and will never replace the feeling of the old one. But its also something to enjoy and focus car thoughts on. Doesn't matter whether you find a 1.5k MX5 or go nuts on a new Lotus, find something to care for, it'll make you feel better..

The bottom line is, there is no budget to even run a cheap MX-5. It's utterly critical that I preserve every penny of the capital from UJI. One day, this will help put us back in something special. And I'm not fool enough to think there is any such thing as free motoring, regardless of what experts may say about "rock solid residuals" or "investment potential". So have ruled out several interim vehicle ideas already

So "alternative focuses" include my golf handicap, a range of DIY or other home projects which Lisa has decided are "important", keeping the remaining (still very nice fleet) in good nick, and probably doing a lot more cycling.

Obviously I hope to stay connected to the Scottish Elises community and related antics. And my track day involvement was already sporadic at best anyway. So will just pop along to spectate or pax from time to time. Might hitch a ride to some further afield gigs just for the craic but that's also budget-dependent.

I should know The Change Curve well enough (and I do!). I'm still somewhere on the downslope, maybe near the trough - which at least means "gradual acceptance" is next

Belatedly seeing your news here. So sorry for you, but as others have said, glad you’re ok.

I know I’d be in a similar situation were anything to happen to mine. It must be 14 years since I got my S2, and I know I could never afford another or anything remotely similar but I’m just about hanging on to Elise ownership while nothing too expensive happens.

But all we can do is keep using them – and better that you were doing that than it’d been holed up in a garage and polished to death.

Funny how attached we get to our little wheeled bathtubs.

These threads usually end with most of us saying it's only a car and at least you walked away OK etc, but 18 years!
