I'd suspect your knee is sore when you get out of the car because you've been doin this then. I have a similar problem, but I only get pain when driving 5+hours. The difficult thing is getting out of the habit of doing it, I think it involes putting the seat back a notch further back than you would normally choose to force you to straighten the leg.
