Taken for a ride....

(If it doesn't work let me know. BTW I'm "Rich H")

This poor fellow has taken his car to a garage as it is popping out of gear, 17 posts in things take a turn for the extreme...

Moral of the story: listen to the rantings of the tech wizards on the forums, they do actually know what they are talking about as they have nothing to gain from lying to you!

This is what the guy posted:
Its been doing this for a while now and then (Rich:Popping out of gear) I just put it down to me not putting it in gear properly but it tends to be doing it more often now which is a pain and abit imbarrasing when you pull off from the lights and the gear slips out most times! Iv been starting off in 2nd lately but i was wondering if anybody knows if this is a big problem or not?
Told, how to adjust it, it has the uprated link kit
Went to a local garage at lunch today and they specialise in tuning. I asked him what he thought it could be and he seems to think the gear box needs stripping and replacing the sync which keeps the gears in position, he showed me a Subaru gear box which he was working on. He seemed to know about Elises though so hopefully hes right! He said there are two different kinds of gear boxes on the S1 and if it is a Rover one its easy. Does this sound right or is it just the linkage?
Told, no, there is only one box with diferent ratios
Took my car down the garage today and i got a phone call at lunch sayin iv got a cosworth gear box and the only way you can get to them to get inside it is by taking the engine out!!! I said you sure its not the linkage but hes having none of it!Hes the mechanic at the end of the day. The price has gone from around £200 to £600!!!!!
Told get it back now, the don't know what car it is
Your jokin, iv just this second come back cos i poped in on my way home and the engine is out so i dont wana push it home. I cant believe how expensive its gona cost me, im well gutted!
Oh dear me..... Still in progress....

No sympathy. Dumb fcuk who won't listen - wo do get them occasionally in the shop and I've got little time for the attitude. Sad thing is, he won't learn from it, I'll bet. :(

It could have just been an adjust, 1 hour tops. To go to a garage and just say fix it is a far too trusting.

Like my bro's g/f's little micra, won't start, she calls the garage and they take it away with a claimed HGF. Claim it will cost £600 to fix or she can have a Astra in part ex, she takes the Astra without a second opinion (For second thoughts you require first ones!) Micra been seen around town recently...

6 months later Astra running a bit rough and water leak, one day won't start. I was back but with no tools, have a look nothing obvious wrong (Water leak from pump, but only a trickle), but no plug spanner and no time to check for spark (Got fuel, it has a shreader(sp?) valve on the end of the fuel rail) One thing I did check was that the cambelt was ok, as there doesn't seem to be any compression (Just whizzing over easily) broke the case open (Fisking torx bolts!) cam belt ok. She calls the same garage to fix it unbeknown to anyone. Cam belt's gone apparently, £600 to fix or another car in part ex, fortunately my bro got wind before she did it again. Car still fecked and with them immobile.
 :protest :chainsaw :thumbsdown

I have heard that Astra's engines are non-interference, it's a 97R, can anyone confirm? If that was the case and the belt has slipped then it's just a new belt, tensioner and timing isn't it?
