Always happy to help

One other point I forgot that I was going to make;
In the years after I passed my test, and still lived at home I got a lot of hastle from my parents and neighbours etc for driving too quickly. In order to get them off my back, and show that I knew what I was doing, I went and did an Instutute of Advanced Motorists course, and passed my IAM test. That is probably one of the biggest factors that means I'm here typing this today. The course got my folks off my back, but really opened my eyes when it comes to observation and driving safely. Gary, it sounds like you are enjoying your new licence and car, and to get even more enjoyment, I would highly recommend the IAM test.

They do it with motorbikes so why not cars ?
But most of them kill themselves in a Saxo 1.buggerall anyway insurance basically stops them from getting anything quick.

And for those that don't insure the car do you think they will stay within an legislation preventing them from getting that imprezza off bazza down the pub
unfortunatly credit is easy to come by and if someone has a decent job buying a civic Type R /Scooby or even an early elise is relativly cheap, you can pay insurance monthly so it may stretch you but it can be done (esp if you deal drugs on the side then it's a business expence ;) )

We have all done things we shouldn't have and at least you know you have driven like a twat (I know I have) the secret is to undertand that the public highway is not the best place to drive at "the limit" wither it be a back road or in town. yes our cars are great fun and handel well maybe we are driving gods, but I have learned that even if you are great the person comming the other way may not and dumping your car in a ditch at speed hurts - alot. I have been lucky I learned the hard way but it's only been my wallet, my pride and my back that's been hurt. it could have been so much worse someone could be dead or worse.

There are ways to get more fun and attention in our cars than blasting along in town ;) ;)

I have tried not to preach as I am not without sin so I will not throw
stones.

EDIT: kinda beaten to it by Dom, Damn having to work!

I have come to realise, too many people are watching and too many people can be unpredictable making our driving styles potentially deadly. - Wrong, just so wrong, and i would love to watch you stand up in court and relay that to the jury!

I get in the car and feel like superman, I feel better than everyone else, and I feel that if I can, I should push the car to what I perceive to be its limits, and make sure everyone around knows it! You go Superman!

I don't want slaughtered for posting how much of a twat I can be in the car.

For the record, I have been pulled 9 times in the Elise, and 3 in one night

I am speechless at the above, I am not one to usually speak up and make a point, but honestly, do you feel better getting that off your chest?!

Dave
Similarly speechless  That is the kind of attitude which will give all Lotus drivers and this forum a bad name.

ADMIN, time to pull this thread..if anything...it's giving SE a very bad name.
Thank goodness the thread didn't get pulled or we would have missed Doms answer adding to many other good or relevant points as made it Tuts and even in Gary's post.

I suppose my post was bit bit DVLA as J33 put it but in all fairness I was based it on what he had posted to that point in time and still think what I said was fair. His timing wasn't the best after I had just done speed related road safety stuff with my primary 2 class.

About 5 years ago very similar posts were made by a young guy from Boness (Not i wasn't Neil) and on one road run things got carried away a bit with him and another Elise ended up written off, though luckily the driver and passengers in other vehicles were not badly injured. This is the sort of thing folk on here such as Tut are getting at. Firstly we don't want anybody injured, secondly we don't want any Lotus cars damaged and thirdly we don't want to get a bad name for ourselves and attract attention. Dom's advice is sound in that there is a time and a place.

The great thing about this community is that we have a wide range of experiences, views and principles and it good to share these in a friendly helpful manner. I don't feel old but my date of birth reminds me that I am in middle age. I do suppose that one age related factor is that when I was young there was far more respect for things and that included the law and abiding by it (whether it was right or wrong).

Between trying to abide by the law and a bit of luck (well lets be honest a lot of luck) in all my driving career (30+ years) I have not been stopped by a Policeman for my driving, had any points or fines and not even had a parking ticket.

However I feel my views and principles are not age related, they are based on my life experiences such as seeing my wee pal killed by a car at 5, my Dad dying in a car crash when I was 10, my cousin being killed at a crossing, being the first on scene at a fatal crash of a young mechanic, giving first aid to that wee boy three years ago (and I can still picture his face clearly). Being a lone parent bring big responsibilities that it is hard to share and that has affected my driving and bike riding. My Mum, brother and I were left homeless and penniless when my Dad died in a RTA. So age rarely has anything to do with people's views, its their life experiences and most of the ones that had most impact happened year ago.

My family experiences also made me have strong views on other things such as balancing work/leisure time, Scotland's binge drinking culture and education so very likely to spout on those subjects as well. Very little views or interest in Politics, Religion or Sport. However its good to share views and sometimes it makes us rethink our own views.

:withstupid

Same reasons for doing it, same outcome.

Parents were hassling me and as my old man was a driving instructor had potential to damage his rep. too. So did the test and believe became much safer for it.

Sounds like you and me should definately NOT hook up any time soon in our cars :D Like me, sounds like you love to show off your car, and the busier the place the better. I loving nothing more than to scream from zero to forty at a set of lights on Glasgow road (edi) as fast as possible. Maybury Road (edi) is fantastic too, but I have come to realise, too many people are watching and too many people can be unpredictable making our drving styles potentially deadly. Im not preaching, and if I am, its to myself too! Just reading this has made me realise that these cars CAN and often DO result in a complete change in attitude within a person. I get in the car and feel like superman, I feel better than everyone else, and I feel that if I can, I should push the car to what I perceive to be its limits, and make sure everyone around knows it!

I dont want slaughtered for posting how much of a twat I can be in the car. My excuse is I have only been driving for 6 months and as such, I have the whole "new kid with a car" as well as the "lotus factor" to contend with. My driving over the last month or two has improved dramatically, I am much more aware of my surroundings and the people who I can affect with my sometimes insane driving. I feel like I am learning at a seriously fast pace, and my respect for other road users whilst still on the short side, is growing.

For the record, I have been pulled 9 times in the Elise, and 3 in one night (said night ended in the grassmarket incident). That was 3 months ago, and I haven't been pulled since - proves I am getting better.
For future reference, if I organise another road run at any stage, neither yourself or J33ama will be welcome.

Quite the opposite mate. I think the general reaction posted in this thread would probably do the SE community proud, if any finger-pointing began.

Exactly, sweeping things under the carpet gives the hand wringing lentilista more cause to whine over. Far better to able to discuss things in the open and encourage sensible driving.

I appreciate the point you guys are trying to get across, but try to be constructive.......slapping them both will serve no purpose......they will just leave the forum and drive (their lotus) in whatever manner they like......

However, with advice like tuts we might change that.......maybe?

J33AMA and Gary should maybe read what they have written before posting!
