That's why I opted for Winter Tyres - My car had Eagle F1 GSD's fitted as standard, and they're terrible in the snow...

Provided the g/f's Corsa doesn't have huuuge rims, you're looking at £40-ish a tyre from Camskill...I paid £160~ for 4 delivered last year, and £40 to have them fitted to my existing (15") wheels...Sub- £200 all in...Fit them from September to March - Job's a carrot... :thumbsup

The wheel socks are decent by all accounts, but you'd need to remove them pretty quickly, if the road you're driving on thaws out...(Think they also have speed limitations??)

Bad here in Livi - worst snow I've ever seen. I spent half an hour clearing the Skoda this morning, drove 1/4 mile and decided that my warm cosy house was a better bet than spending the day in the car so I turned back. I work in Linlithgow and really didn't fancy the trip over the Bathgate hills.

A colleague from Livingston was snowed in on Monday, so clearly not getting any better since!

Where in Linlithgow do you work Kev?

Hi Campbell (and happy Christmas BTW)

How was it near you this morning? I got snowed in (even with the Volvo) which is the first time in ten years! I and a few civic minded neighbours decided to clear the main road into our scheme with what shovels we had. Got to keep the wheels of Falkirk industry turning!

Can't wait to take the seven out in it

I was hoping to get a set for Lynda's VRS but £105 per tyre verse £42 for a Kumho KU31, needless to say the Kumho's won!

I just did the same. Got 4 x toyo T1R's (they seem ok in these conditions) for £27 quid each and paid Costco £32 quid for fitting them. Barginanomics. I am now much happier as well because I have new tyres on the car!

T-1R's are very different from proper winter tyres.

Winter tyres are designed to give maximum traction in snow, at the expense of noise, dry cornering grip and fuel economy. They also have a different compound of rubber that is designed to work at very low temperatures.

I'm going to get me some proper winter tyres for the KA, as its particularly pish in the snow. Instead of 195/45/16, i'm thinking of some 185/60/14's on a set of steel wheels. They are £38 instead of £78. Should be able to pick up some steel wheels from a scrappy to fit a ford.

Hey Jonathan, nice to hear from you!

Never ventured out with the car, just took the kids along the town in sledges then hit the Peel for some serious downhill!

Our cul de sac looks like a scene from The Day After Tomorrow, but it's flat so who cares :-) Might get the Elise tomorrow for a laugh, since I will finally finally be on holiday I hope

I am hoping they will be very decent in the dry as I believe T1R's are popular on some performance cars. Or is it more 888's?

You may or may not like the T1R in the dry; they will be good in the wet though. Brand new tyres of any type are an improvement in the snow. That said, you'll find the tread soon fills up with icy snow.

Some people don't like them on the elise; others get on fine with them. For the price, it kind of doesn't matter as it's not going to be properly dry until June anyway ;-)

Bald 888's don't work that well in the snow :-)

Cheers,
Robin

Anyone seen my car?

Could of sworn it was there yesterday.

Just spent an hour digging it out in readiness for a trip to Auchterarder tomorrow.
Still not sure if we'll make it.
A big freeze predicted for tonight.

Have to agree with the tyre chat, fitted vredsteins again this year and I wouldn't have go up a lot of the farm tracks without them, braking is most impressive improvement wihtout silly abs getting in the way.

On a more fun note, for those of us unfortunate enough to have FWD cars have you tried sledging them yet?

Straight line 30-45mph, hand brake on, let it settle then ramp on some lock and quickly correct it you can drive along at 45 degrees in a straight line :D then if you get bored just fling it in the other direction like a really slow motion scandinavian flick.

Remember to clear out the radiator pods at the front or the car could at worse overheat or at best steam the outside of the windscreen up.
