What? They blaming Scots now? To quote Ian Duncan, "joke before anyone throws a fit" ;-) Liked your earlier post, Ian...a lot. Also someone else's ref confusion on how to cash benefits now the PO has gone - not because I'm down on benefits-types, but just because it characterises the mindlessness and "thrill-factor-only" of the whole scary shabang.

I see tonight that the media are trying to goad some Glaswegians into starting some trouble there too. Clever, really clever

Yep those serial shoppers are a nasty bunch, don't want to mess with them ;-)

I heard some remark on News or Newsnight tonight ref Scotland having a different approach to discipline - said in a genuinely complimentary way - which was nice.

I think I also read recently, maybe when the Greeks started to freak out, that extended periods of economic difficulty or uncertainty quite often lead to periods of lawlessness and social unrest. Might be stating the obvious but the Mark Duggan shooting seems to have simply been the match that lit the tinderbox of disillusionment. Where do you go from here?

Bring on the water cannon, I say. Forget trying to round up the wastrels and using the Court "system", too much latency. A short sharp shock is needed right now so that the ones watching it on telly and wanting to join in are in fact dissuaded because they realise they are going to get hurt.

What has our society come to that we cannot defend our innocent people from a mindless offending minority?

The kind of person that I am assuming is involved i this kind of stuff only fear one thing - someone or some thing that is "madder" "dafter" "crazier" than them. Then they will retreat.

Said to Kellie earlier if it was my shop I'd have metal shutters wired to the mains on it - watch them drop like flies. Not fatal - but enough to confuse their tiny minds and head off elsewhere. Is that why we have electric fences for farm animals. Or should that be Animal Farm :-o

I'd then head off to jail for GBH no doubt....

Good plan.

I'd also stock up my consumer electronics emporium with those plastic lookalikey tellies that they use on displays in IKEA. That'll confuse them for a week or two.

If the shops are far away from where the ne'erdowells live there is less likely to be looting...

Water cannon is useful on large hemmed in crowds. It is less effective on the hit and run approach that the looters are taking as you can't get the water cannon there quickly enough. Shutting down BBM would have been more effective last night. All of Rachels pals have a Blackberry and it was only recently that it became clear to me why...BBM cos it's free innit.

What has it come to indeed although the nature and speed of this riot has made it near impossible to police effectively.

I want the Cops now to snatch everyone they manage to identify one at a time in early morning all filmed by the TV news.

I want them all to live in real fear of that noise at 3 am.

Then we can all play knock and run...

I worked in SA just before the end of Apartheid and there were regular riots.

Each time it happened one or two of the Indian supervisors at work would tell me they had to go home because their houses were burning. After it happened a few times I thought the Indians were winding me up..

Turns out that when the whites built a new settlement they always placed the Indian community settlement in between the blacks and whites.

When the blacks got pissed off they would march to burn the whites but ended up burning out the Indians instead as they were in the line of fire (so to speak).

Worked every time. :o

All they have acheived is cost to us tax payers in these hard times. From policeing to insurance all will go up in cost.

The police are not allowed to use water cannon as they are not trained on them. It would have to be the troops.

Warmed to the stand in Police Commissioner yesterday, announced that he was warning the low lives that they could shortly expect a knock on the door at three in the morning, or more likely the sound of splintering wood.

Loved Noops idea.

Too wet and cold.

Scotland has less of a track record in rioting in general although there have been a few over the years. Riots are clearly possible in every large city where there is a great deal of social deprivation and areas of lawlessness and Scotland has plenty of that. It might also be simply that the large housing estates in Glasgow are on the outskirts away from the main shopping areas.
Too drunk to bother.

I see there was a kid arrested in Glasgow for setting up a Facebook page.

The Guardian wrote:Shopkeepers in Wolverhampton have been left counting the cost after yobs hit Queen Street, Dudley Street, Wulfruna Street, Princess Street and Market Street.

Thousands of pounds of damage has been caused by the rioting, which started after youths congregated in Queen Square shortly after 4.30pm. Up to 300 youths gathered there as riot police formed blockades in an attempt to cut off nearby Dudley Street.

A thunder flash was let off causing dozens to scatter and a man who appeared to be hurt was led away by police. But within minutes windows had been smashed at stores across the city centre, including the Job Centre in Queen Street and Burton's menswear. The shutter at No 1 Pizza, in Market Street, was also torn, leaving shopkeepers unable to close the building.

I reckon the whole thing has been masterminded by members of The Glass & Glazing Federation.
