You won't find me on this thread very often, as I don't know much about watches,.. and am not really that interested. However, I do appreciate the craftsmanship, quality and style of a good quality watch, and understand that the fine engineering can be thing of beauty. Perhaps when I have the coin to spare, it will become something of greater interest to me.

So, can someone tell me if I'm right or wrong here: I just had a conversation with someone who is going to Spain on holiday soon, and is looking forward to getting a £20 fake rolex watch. I said I did not understand why you would want a fake; his explanation is that it looks like a £5K watch, to which I responded, so you'll have a sh*t £20 watch so that others think you have an expensive watch? (I still don't get it)... his reply was that the fakes are actually good, high quality watches. Is it possible to buy a good, high quality watch for £20? Do people really just buy something to make others think they can afford more that they can? Answers on a post card! (Or forum post at least :D ).

Fakes are a hot topic... £20 will not get you anything but a nasty piece of sh*t though, designed to appeal to pissed tourists.

You can spend hundreds on "replicas" with proper mechanical movements.

Depends what you're looking for in a watch. I wouldn't buy a £2k watch just to show it off, so getting a £200 version of it has no interest to me. Other views vary.

My thoughts are it will have a cheap quartz movement that will be pretty accurate. I wouldn't touch one though as I doubt it will last any anyone who knows what they are looking at will spot it a mile off. It's like turning up at a Ferrari meet in your bodykitted MR2 turbo , it's fast and does the job fine. but you end up looking like a dick.

I don't get it either Dom. There is a satisfaction in having a nice (genuine) watch. In my eyes the only person you are cheating with a fake is yourself, to tight to buy the real thing.
People wearing fake watches are like those running around in a £500 Fiesta with a turbo badge stuck on the back

Replicas can be good quality, just as a £100,000 replica of a £2.5m Cobra would be a beautiful car in its own right. A £20 Rolex fake does not count as a replica any more than a MR2 with some fiberglass and a F355 badge counts as a replica.

Perfectly good watches do exist for £20.

IMHO people who really love watches tend to own them and use them to make themselves feel good, not to impress people.

My favourite watch also happens to be my most valuable one, but i tend to wear it under a shirt at work where you can't see it. Perversely when im wearing a t-shirt i've often got some massive (hideous?) plastic creation that cost a small percentage of the cost of the speedy. If i wear my TAG then, to most people, it's just a chunky digital that could be made by a host of manufacturers and sold for under £100....it's only people that know watches that notice it. I don't wear either watch to impress people.

As such, for most watch enthusiasts, a replica / fake / homage wouldn't cut it.....it wouldnt give half the pleasure that the real thing would.

All car enthusiasts that i know practice the "backwards glance" when they park their fav car up and walk away. Watch enthusiasts just check the time a lot more than normal people ;)

EDIT : As graeme says you can spend quite a lot of money on a replica though - they aren't all cheap and nasty. Still dont think i'd buy one though.

There's bound to be two faces to this, surely... (do you see what I did there? )

I'm sure everyone in this thread, like me, owns a nice watch for the pleasure of knowing you have something a bit special. There even being times where you'd prefer not to have it noticed, and even feeling modest if someone makes an admiring comment.

But there will certainly be people in the world who own a watch for the flash/bling factor, purely because they want it to be noticed. Maybe a bit like some folk don't care on the quality or pedigree of a t-shirt, just so long as it has Abercomby/FCUK/whatever written across the chest as large/bold as possible. For these folk a £20 fake probably does the job perfectly adequately.

I think I'd buy a watch if I appreciated the craftsmanship and the look/feel of the thing regardless of branding. Think of the replica shark nosed Ferrari Chris Rea commissioned. Not genuine doesn't mean not amazing.

Can see the point of buying a fake to see if you actually like the feel/look of before buying the real, or to use in place of your genuine one when you dont want to wreck it.

I am guilty of buying replicas in the past but have grown up a bit since then and learnt the meaning of you get what you pay for.
