Re: Watch lovers?

I haven't worn a watch for a few years but I've started to feel a little naked recently and Pauline has very kindly offered to buy me a new watch for my birthday.

I've been having a look at the websites that offer good discounts over RRP e.g. http://www.swisswatchesdirect.co.uk. I noticed that these places aren't authorised dealers and they say they buy from authorised dealers. The watch I'm looking at is advertised with '2yrs - Official TAG Heuer Warranty'. So, it should come with an official warranty card stamped by an authorised dealer.

They appear to get great reviews. I just wondered if any of our experts has any experience or thoughts?

I bought mrs donkey a seamaster aqua terra for her 30th a month or so ago from an AD (Mappin & Webb in the weeg) for £60 more than they are punting the same model for. We got about 12% off RRP just by pointing out that i fly out of T5 once a month and i can get a discount there.

Now the SM isn't a limited edition or anything so i dare say that approach doesn't work with the really in demand watches, but my gut would be you could get similar deals by turning up readies in hand. Might be totally wrong though.

Pauline is flying out to the states tomorrow through Heathrow but I'm not sure if she's got much time between flights to go shopping.

Even if she can't, the threat of being able to use it got me a good discount. Mrs Donkey loved the champaign and fuss treatment in M&W and that alone was worth the £60 extra.

Lol, it'd be great to do a Richard Gere in one of those shops, hate it when you go in to a place and they make you feel like they're doing you a favour by selling you something.

I bought my Mrs a Cartier a few years ago, I was travelling a lot at the time so checked prices in Perth, Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai, London etc. etc.
Ended up back in the first place I looked :damnfunny It always seems to be the case............

Joking aside, even for this jaded cynic, it was a really nice experience. Slightly took the sting out of the price and made it more memorable than me rocking up with a bag from t5 and then having to get it sized.

This kinda happened with my Wife & I when we were in Singapore in 2010 when the GP was on.
I was buying a Tag Heuer Carrera (of some description) - must have trailed my poor Mrs round every Tag shop in Singapore.
It was a hot day - we were wearing T-shirts / shorts / flip flops - walked into the new Tag Heuer shop in the Marina Bay Hotel (3 towers & the infinity swimming pool that joins them all up)
Sales manager kinda of snubbed us & spent all her time showing a guy wearing a suit a Leather jacket - Steve McQueen retro thing........ needless to say he never bought it !
She then came over to ask if we needed any help & I told her exactly what I was after - by quoting her model numbers of the ones i was looking at.
Ending up buying a Carrera Day date - £1500 more (RRP) than i was expecting!
I think she must have felt guilty, as she threw in a 150 yr aniversary book worth £120 !

Met Jenson Button when i was claiming the tax back ........... (yawn...... page 50 of this thread )

I've just bought an Omega Seamaster 300m. A Quartz one - fed up winding up my good Carrera!
I bought it off a dealer / jeweler in Athens

It arrived to my door in 4 days !
It was like brand new. (as the bloke said)

He emailed me & sent me his Facebook link.

Cool - going to buy that !
lots of good reviews

"It does make a slight noise when winding the watch but it is quiet and smooth (if that makes sense) and not at all annoying on the ears when trying to sleep. If kept on a shelf a few feet away, then perfect.

It winds for one hour, stops for 3 and then winds for an hour (repeat and rinse)

Reason I gave it 4/5 is that it has a switch on it to let it wind anti-clockwise also and doesn't do it automatically. It either winds clockwise or anti-clockwise, though you have to press it when you want it to change direction. No biggie really but would have been better if it did it all automated.

Would this put me off buying it again if i needed to?... NOT AT ALL and for the price, it is perfect and does exactly what it says it does. "

Mine doesnt have a timer so I have it plugged into a light timer like folk use when away from home on holiday etc - set for running 2 hrs per day.

It's not noisy in the slightest but the plug-in timer is so I have it in a rarely-used room so the missus doesn't get pissed off
