Bad news, One year on......
Re: Bad news
Jen sorry, just read this thread with a gulp. So delighted everything has worked out ok. Get well soon.
Re: Bad news - now for some good news!
Just letting you all know that Alan is now home!!!
I got a phonecall from him this morning asking me to come and pick him up so if any of you wanted to see him, just come to the house. If you need our address, just PM me!
I'm sooooooooo happy!! Although we both know he still has a long way to go. The consultants told us yesterday it will be at least a year of hand clinic and physio appointments.
A bit of good news considering he only had the accident 4 days ago!

Fantastic - hospitals are crap places to be at the best of times, so I'm really pleased for you both that he's coming home.
Though he'll no doubt now expect you to wait on him hand and foot <sorry, couldn't resist>
Cheers,
Robin

That's really good news.
Much better to be in your own environment to recuperate - these hospitals are full of sick people. I was shocked to find they bear no similarity to the hospitals portrayed in the Carry on films so it is pointless being there.
Best wishes for the recovery period Allan , remember Jen you have to cater for his every need.

Great to hear Alan is home, Michelle always said she got on better at home after the kids were born than being stuck in the hospital.

Alan/Jen,
I just got wind of this. Wow! What an ordeal. I'm so happy to hear you're on the mend at home now Alan. Jen, you're ability to keep your calm during this is amazing.
I had a similar accident in 2007 losing much of the motor function in my left hand. Couldn't raise or open my hand. While it didn't seem possible at the time, the Doctors indicated it might be possible for the nerves to regenerate, but they indicated there were no guarantees (different with every patient). But it's slow...less than a mm per day (about the same rate hair grows). After meeting with a hand therapist, there was a concern the muscles that I couldn't flex would atrophy before the nerves could regenerate. They gave me an electro-shock gun that when touched to certain places on my arm flexed the muscles for me artificially (4-5 times per day - multiple points) staving off atrophy. My arm muscles quickly lost size and strength, becoming flabby. But after a few weeks of regular use shocking the crap out of my arm/hand... The muscles retained their muscular tissue structure. I called it my ray gun (the Zapper). Used it for nearly 7 months, and then slowly but surely certain muscles began to work... Weak at first... But stronger over time. Stopped using the gun at 8 months. After 1 year, nearly 90% back... Two years 95%... now 98%.
Keep the faith. Never give up. Keep the muscles strong artificially while the nerves heal. If you want my Ray gun and info on where the arm muscle firing points are, let me know and I'll send to you.
