Maybe you should express interest and get the ball rolling. Steve Butts got upto that figure over several years, and it was some engine. He also got his S1 Elise down to 615kg.

Is it going to cost as much as a Honda conversion though?

And is it going to be more or less reliable?

Interesting times :-)

A good point Jason, and one that has come up before with FD.

I do not have a camera, do not take photos, and am a negative virgin. However I do know that semi professional photographers such as Chris King from Stelvio, and our very own Fergus, put copyright notices on the bottom of their photos, and conditions for printing or linking.

However how do I know from the hundreds of photos over the years of Elises etc that I have on my hard drive, whether I am entitled to post it up when someone asks for an example of a car etc?

Why would Andy know that it was your photo and that he should ask permission? It was a car on track, and we have thousands of them.

Not trying to be obtrusive, but wondering if I am missing something that we should all be aware of, outside of copywrite law.

I'm sure we won't get into a copyright permission debate on here again, if there are any concerns in this particular instance, people can handle those directly.

My take on this is, innocent oversight. The internet has much blurred / diluted people's take on copyright on all sorts of things, not just pictures. Before anyone jumps on me, I didn't say this makes it right...but it makes it easier to accept there was likely no commercial or malicious intent in the re-use of an image. And I am speaking as one who has freely contributed and shared many images in the spirit of the club.

I've seen quite a lot of watermarking - Jason's got a nice take on that actually - which solves the problem of identity quite neatly.

I understand your point, Tut.

However - black and white (no pun intended! :) ) application of copyright means no image can be used without originator's permission... Now, obviously a grey area exists where we all post links to web-published images, etc. That's fine on forums etc (only speaking for my own images of course), cos it's a link to the original image. And we all download the odd low-res image for our home viewing, desktop wallpaper, etc.

However - using an image on a commercial site, uploaded to that site's server, without permission is infringement of copyright.

My web uploaded images (like most folks') come with all rights reserved notices... However, it's also worth noting that photographers own copyright of any images they create without needing to actually register/declare it.

In this situation, I sent Andy a copy of the image last year, for personal and/or RLC promotional use - specifically for printing to help TSE/RLC IYSWIM - not for 3rd party publishing. But that's an issue for he and I - and like I say, I don't have an issue with it being used in this context - only too pleased that it's of use to him/SLS - but would have liked to be asked first. Images by other photogs on the new site - potentially - could cause Andy problems if someone chooses to get awkward... I'm sure nobody would - it's an SE related business kind of, but I hope you see my point... and I hope Andy understands why I posted, and it's a heads up incase he/SLS gets grief.

[did not mean to open a can of worms - I'm too nice (Fd always telling me that :P ) to want to make a huge thing of this]

Agree with Campbell - I was perhaps naive in thinking this wouldn't balloon into a copyright debate. Apols for that.

Back on topic...

Like the site, and if I ever own an Elise (want one! but too attached to my Se7en to have to choose :D )... having read others' comments here, there's little doubt it'd go to SLS for servicing

"SLS is a far less dynamic experience than JPS as I don't have to drive to another country for an oil change!" (Paul Anderson, Edinburgh).....

Just a thought.... you dont see Dan smearing anyone else on his website. Fine to post opinions on a public forum like SE but it could be seen as slander on a company web site.. might want to edit out that one.

Ali, wish you all the best with your new site. :thumbsup
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

WTF is all this about :damnfunny :damnfunny

Its just a picture on as website not as if its on the cover of Evo - & its just a comment that's stating its more convenient, its a personal opinion so who cares? Plus business is business, which includes competition - great guy and everyone should know that.

All the best matey I wish you every success! :thumbsup

It's the Law . . .

There's a guy on a photography forum I read who used an image he took off the web and used it on a small scale 'friends' commercial website after cropping out the copyright stamp, he's been caught by getty images (the copyright holder of the image), his bill is 4000quid and immediate removal of the image (IIRC) or go to court for copyright breach, and they will take him to court if necessary, and they will win . . .

IIRC there's another guy on pistonheads in a similar situation . . .

Ignorance is no excuse . . .

I actually meant the post

I'm sure Andy & Ali both know about Copyright Law so if you have a problem then send them an email or call them directly. No need to post anything except a well done on a post that is meant to tell the community that Ali is up and running. He is after all probably going to be of use to most people on here.

Just my 2p but stuff like that should be taken up with them directly.

Puts a damper on what should be a happy post

These two statements appear to contradict one another. The first one to me means discuss copyright stuff offline. The second one to me means that the copyright holder shouldn't be concerned about a minor abuse. Or am I being thick?

By the way, healthy criticism is in fact a better way to help your friends prosper in business than blind allegiance.

Jason has a valid point and Andy will no doubt be grateful because he could have fallen foul of copyright breach from someone who would actually get the lawyers involved and possibly seek damages - now that the issue has been raised I am sure he will be scrupulous in making sure he has copyright holder's consent before using an image on the web.

Your comments, on the other hand, whilst no doubt well meaning are not really constructive.

Just my 2p's worth.

Cheers,
Robin
