This smells like more "B.S." for us motorists. I suppose all the "specs" cameras will be within city limits and on major roads, I can't see them being on lesser used roads like in the Borders or in Galloway or up in the north of Scotland as they wont generate enough fines.

I reckon if they do spring up on lesser used roads they will probobly end up being vandalised as no-ones going to be around most for the time and it's not like the police will be doing any "real" traffic patroling... a camera can do that job!

What a load of bollocks...

As if folk obey the 60 limit.... they'll ignore an even more extreme speed limit...

At a guess, the investment to implement SPECS on anything more than key trunk routes and the odd blackspot, particularly in Scotland, will render this latest wheeze fairly stillborn...or at least low impact for us lucky northerners.

At the same time, a 50 limit will attract the benefit of reduced fuel consumption and will also have the effect of seeming to increase congestion...both of which will keep the green lobby happy for years.

Don't forget that the non-urban single carriageway national limit in places like France and Spain is 90kph (56mph).

Could not agree more that once again, the money should be "poured" into driver training, tightening up the test, etc, instead of throwing it at scams which will only make inefficient use of it through utter mismanagement of the project in the first place.

Wonder how long before magazines like EVO are rendered "top shelf" because they focus on spirited driving for the sheer pleasure of it...

I'm hoping this "kite Flying".

Government say we're going to do X of Y and then gague reaction.

In most cases the it doesn't happen or is watered down.

We just need to make sure that a intelligent, reasoned, argument about why this shouldn't happen is made to them.

As ever, this is always a touchy feely approach, as the effect of the government going too far is a rection they cannot control.

Why don't we start a "Hooning Party" - removing all speed limits from twisty roads around Scotland. I propose the following, apt appointment and party leader :

I've been thinking about doing just that...Load the Elise into a container and ship it of to Cape Town. Only thing is I think I'll need to get a Honda conversion done before I do that. A few nice roads out there!

Can we not take our own elise nation by force, basically just invade the west coast and claim it as our own indepedent nation where the driving test is much harder but some some road sections are unrestricted. Who's with me? The revolution starts tomorrow.

I am with Jamiey on this - kite flying!!

Test the water to gauge how much outcry it provokes, and if not too much then lets go for it !!
Keeps the Greens happy and increases the revenue from speeding fines.

If no one reacts then it will happen

Got to be worth the couple of minutes it takes to sign up.

When have this bunch of lying hypocritical b*stards ever done anything the "people" asked them?

Somewhere between 1 and 2 million people took to the streets to protest against the lying scum's phoney reasoning to invade Iraq and they still did it and families all across Britain are still losing sons and daughters because of it (Oh yeah and it's probably cost the guts of £10 billion by now!)

Well I just got a rubbish reply today to the following petition.
“We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to place all possible pressure on ACPO to relieve Meredydd Hughes of all road policing duties.”
Details of Petition:
“Meredydd Hughes, former ACPO Head of Road Policing Business Area, was last year banned from driving for reaching 90mph in a 60mph zone, his third speeding offence. As the case emerged, ACPO announced he was to step down from his road policing duties. However, he effectively continues to perform the same duties as Head of Business Area for Uniformed Operations including Road Policing. A three-time convicted speeder with responsibility for road policing at this level undermines any Government road safety message with regard to speeding. All possible pressure should therefore be placed on ACPO to relieve Mr Hughes of all road policing duties.”

You signed a petition asking the Prime Minister to "place all possible
pressure on ACPO to relieve Meredydd Hughes of all road policing duties."

The Prime Minister's Office has responded to that petition and you can view
it here:

http://www.number10.gov.uk/Page18508

Thank you for your e-petition calling for all possible pressure to be placed on the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) to relieve Meredydd Hughes, the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire, of all road policing duties.

It is for Association of Chief Police Officers themselves to allocate particular business portfolios to individual chief officers. However, it should be noted that it is Mick Giannasi, Chief Constable of Gwent, and not Mr Hughes, who holds the roads policing portfolio. Mr Hughes is Head of the ACPO Uniformed Operations Business Area (of which the roads policing portfolio is one part)

That petition website is a steaming pile of turd. Nothing good will ever happen because of it. I suspect we need to be more like the french to get things done, if we feel strongly enough about them.
