There's a time for getting harnesses fitted to your car. Mine came when I hurt my back going through a corner as I was coming out of the seat and landing on the side of it. Doesn't take much to put my back out of alignment tho.

I toyed with the idea of harnesses (also have the standard seats in my Exige) but have decided against it for the time being. Going to try the CG Lock first. Kenny is organising a group buy on these - see the thread over in the technical section.

I would say the time for buying a harness is before you hurt yourself in any way.
As usual, work on what’s holding you back.

In this case if your driving is suffering from lack of stability in the seat, then you need to find a way to keep yourself stable.

For example, I always felt uncomfortable in my normal shoes and without gloves, so one of the first things I bought was a pair of driving shoes and gloves and that alone saw me much quicker (at size 12 feet, you need to be able to move them)

I don’t move on my seats, my arse is probably so big that it just won’t bodge, so until now I haven’t seen a need for harnesses. But now I’m thinking on preparing the car to be able to enter some races next year, so I’m looking into lighter seats/harnesses. But the std ones are not holding me back.

I’ve spoken with some people that just couldn’t drive without harnesses, but just because they slide abut so much that their driving is compromised.

But on a crash yes, harnesses would be better. The seats are just for comfort.

My opinion? you need driving lessons and track time only (for now)

That they do - I have some nice 3" willians fitted to my car.

Bit of a pain in the ass - but look very racey

Excus my ignorance - but how do the harnesses attatch to the car? Do you need any other mods for them?

Ali, did you get longer bolts to accept the harness lap belt and the inertia reel at the seat fixing points? The bolts on my seats dont have enough thread to accept x2 fittings plus associated washers to space them properly? Hence Im just running with Harness's at present!

Harness bar across the top and the bottom is the seatbelt mounts on the seat.

Just bolt in, all the holes are there already.

They do look cool, and I dislike the unattached feeling with normal belts now since I got rid of the standard belts (Well they are in the cupboard!)

I installed harnesses in my S1 a few weeks ago. Probably just because I thought they looked cool. The harness bar was £117 from eliseparts and I bought the harnesses of eBay for about £120 (pair) IIRC. They are Willans and were fitted to Bell & Coville 160's. I don't have slotted seats so they are bolt in types. I didn't have long enough bolts to retain the seat belts. Not sure where you stick the harnesses if you do retain the seatbelts when the harness are not being used.
Negatives:
Slight PITA doing them up but am getting used to this and can do it in less than 20 secs, so no biggy.
Bit of a PITA when trying to reverse or see out of some junctions. Easy work around for this is to simply loosen the shoulder straps when manouvering then pulling them tight again.
No use for small kids in the car. My 4 yo niece was desperate for a hurl in the car but there was no way they could secure her safely. Not sure about child seats but I think ScottF has had some success on that front
Also a bit of a pain if you have pax's who are clueless on how to do them up, which is probably most people.
Doesn't half crush shirts and suits

Positives:
Look cool 8)
Makes you feel very secure and at one with the car - particularly good under braking and I am sure cornering - if driving fast enough i.e. on track.

On the whole sounds like the -ve's outweigh the +ve's but I like them.

cheers for your input guys, driver training is def top of my list but its just arranging a suitable time to do it. i am thinking of a wee road trip in september for a walshy day, maybe we could book all four slots and a wee group go down. I do currently move above in my seat so hopefully the harnesses will sort that, i guess it depends on what they sell for at the end of the day.... what do we think my current seats would be worth if i sold them on?? £500 :? if i got that for them and managed to get the ones on ebay for £700 or so i reckon it would be worth the swap. if i got them it might encourage myself to keep the car which will be far cheaper in the long run. decisions, decisions..........

Ed,

You gotta keep your car mate,

at least until you can do it some form of justice from behind the wheel.

To sell it now would be like dying a virgin.

Ed, you're beginning to sound like me with the car scenario ;)
I think pretty much the same as Bernie.

If you want them, get them.
I've used Ali's harnesses and when I drove the 240R and they are much better than standard belts. You feel more secure with no movement.

Only negative I can see is a PITA to fasten up.

Go for it.

 nothing like you G....yet!

I am definently keeping the car until at least until autumn next year when i will either decide to change it or s/c it, am thinking along the lines of the s/c at the moment. hopefully lotus will have brought out an aftermarket kit by then. i reckon if i mod mine now it will make the decision easier in 12 months time. :D
