Puma is a good shout.

My brother just sold his smart roadster and I would say that there is plenty of scope for things going wrong in one of those as much as any RWD car. Even with traction control on, it used to step out at any opportunity in the wet.

If he can buy a cat d or cheap elise for 6 or 7k (shouldnt be hard) and get it insured for less than £2k I dont think its a bad idea. As long as hes sensible. Mate of mine had an S2000 at 18 and was a nugget in it, but never crashed, so he should be fine.

Second the Puma, 1.7 is by far the best engine and they are very nippy. Good fun and sporty too. Good idea!

Not advertised or anything yet but ballpark is probably 5.5K.

I tried to talk Nicola into a tow car (new Freelander was an option). But it will probably be a sporty hatch of some description...

Needs to have some space/practicality (although our definition of this is not the same as most folks). :D

Drove a VR6 when I was that age. 13 points later, 1 year's 'break' from driving and a written off vee-dub, I learnt the meaning of a steep insurance quote!

There are exceptions to every rule, but I think he'd prang himself :?

Valid points all.
My view is wait. £2k is crazy talk for insuarance. What is the point? At 19 he'll just be delighted to be driving. If he can get something that looks cool and sounds cool I am sure he will be chuffed and £2k better off (less insuarnce).
Not sure whether more or less power is good. Less power and you are less inclined to try a dodgy overtake, more power may allow you to make the pass though.
I quite like the Smart Roadster although never driven one. I think RWD is probably quite good at an early age so why not an MR2 Mk1 or 2. The Mk2 ones seem quite popular amongst some of the young guys at the moment. Funny as I really struggled to shift mine in 2001.

P.S.
First car (age 18) - Mk2 1100cc Escort. Nearly binned it trying to get the @rse out in the wet :D
Next 2 cars (19- 24)- Fiesta. V easy to drive and "safe" understeer
Next 2 cars (24-31) - Mk1 & Mk2 MR2's. Great cars and was tempted to buy another before buying my elise back

I would not be against a 19yr getting an Elise but I would want him on the track sharpish and make a big point that he can through it around on track but not on the road.

Only problem is what do you aspire to if you have an Elise at 19?

Thinking about it, I'd tell him to get a 106 Ralleye :) Not too common, and those in the know know its a cracking little stripped out GTI - without the chav of a 106 quicksilver on 18 inch rims :)
