Sorry for a thread drift, but is the Ipad a better buy than a laptop if you're mainly an internet browser? I need to update my laptop and its mainly used for surfing, with about 10% working at home requirement. If the screen tapping was just too weird, can you plug in a traditional keyboard?
Cheers,
Greg
I use it when I'm going over to the office with no great need for anything other than answering emails. Good web surfing (you'll usually find me on the sofa most evenings surfing while elaine watches pish) as long as you realise it doesn't display flash content, so check which pages you use regularly which do.
Trad keyboard (both a dock and bluetooth versions) are available, the onscreen works fine for occasional emailing, but would get tiresome for writing any documentation. Also now has added print support from the device itself (for some wifi printers)
So, my old clunky laptop is only ever used for mucking about with the Elise ECU now - mostly use my office desktop for work-related and iPad for leisure (plus limited work, which sounds a lot like your requirements)

You can just keep your existing laptop for the odd bit of work and buy your ipad so that you don't feel left out
Elliot recently bought an android tablet; it will be good when the s/w catches up, but right now it's neither a kindle nor an ipad. That said it is excellent value for money as a media player - supports all the different audio/video formats plus of course web browsing and a host of games for android of which there are plenty.
I remain to be convinced by the tablet format. If you are 99% a consumer of information, fair enough, but the format just doesn't seem to support producers very well. No doubt it will work well for facebook where there is no information
Cheers,
Robin

I just put Ubuntu 10.10 on mrs donkey's old netbook.
It's transformed a utterly shagged XP netbook into a nice quick machine which is perfect for web browsing.
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.
....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

Ubuntu is really good (version 8 i was running), not had a look at 10.10 yet though but will do asap. Download a beta of Google OS too but not tried that yet ether but its sounding promising. Read a report that Win7 may be the last big MS operating system , claiming many users dont know the differece between OS and a browser so why not just run everything in the cloud. Fine for really basic tasks and apps im sure but not so much for developers
