Hi
To test the line for noise - dial 17070 and select option 2.
There should be no noise or crackling on the line - if there is it is the line that is at fault.
Cheers

Re: Blonde in distress...
The fee would only be due if it's customer premise equipment that's failed.
The socket inside the master socket is a test socket - when you remove the master socket front panel to access it, you disconnect the whole rest of the telephone wiring inside the house. This means that you are testing the BT line and socket (they're responsible for the line up to and including the inside of the master socket, I believe), the microfilter and patch cable to your ADSL router and your ADSL router. By using more than one patch cable, more than one microfilter and more than one router, all of which are known to work elsewhere, you really have done enough to warrant a visit from BT without risking a fee.
Cheers,
Robin

4.5 hours elapsed since this call was logged, c'mon guys, shake a leg
SE remote support at its best. Impressive...most impressive (as Darth Vader would say).
Iain Boag is probably shaking his head and staring blankly into his G&T right this moment.
Note to self...some of my outlaws are with Talk Talk, if they call me with an issue I'm going to send them Robin's post in full

Absolutely right. Just had BT out myself and I have to say the guy was brand new, didn't bat a lid at my patently home installed master socket (sitting next to a network switch recommended by your good self many moons ago).robin wrote:The fee would only be due if it's customer premise equipment that's failed.

My fault was a badly installed ADSL <something> at the exchange which had chaffed through it's wire. As an aside I've had BT out before and although they threaten a 130 UKP fee it is purely to put peple off. Plug into the master socket as R suggests and in the unlikely event it is equipment at your end then just bluff it out. Worked for me in the past.

Robins right about zero charge if it's the service that's failed. Why they are insisting on a fee up front is beyond me.
I've tested the copper side of the line and it's not showing any problems.
Modern sockets have test points. Older sockets have the extensions hard wired and you can't separate the house wiring from the line.
Whispers *You can - its not rocket science - but don't get caught fiddling with it because they love to charge for ripping out that lovely brushed aluminum face plate/fancy cat5 setup or anything that isn't a bog standard socket. If it's beyond the half plate on a new socket it's fair game because it's part of your house, not the line*
Unless she's been at the wiring it won't be that. It's worked fine till now so shouldn't matter. I know engineers have been seen but there's an engineer within 10m of your line nearly 24/7. If they are at it with sausage fingers it'll usually go off altogether - not just the adsl.
I'll have a guy test that the adsl is leaving the port at the exchange on talk talks equipment tomorrow. If it comes back up at any time post it and I'll stop them. It's not a big deal to check but it needs hands on if the remote tests don't show an issue.

Pete - your a lucky lad. Another day and another engineer and you might have been stung.

Usual S_E response, what would we do without us. Cheers Campbell, meant to send it by pm, but too many windows open.

Clare asked me to thank everybody for their help and advice as of course she can not do it herself.
Gav arranged for an Openreach engineer to call in, but he could not trace the problem either.

Re: Blonde in distress...
Tut,
Is it possible you can describe the symptoms as clearly as possible for us to think about?
In particular what router model is she using, which of the LEDs on the front do light up (or blink) and which of them don't.
If she has the basic ADSL layer up (that's usually an LED with a name like ADSL or WAN) but not the "internet" (which is usually a LED with a name like IP, PPP or Internet) then the problem is almost certainly a configuration error at either her end (unlikely as it did work) or their end (given it's TalkTalk, massively likely).
Is she still on BT ADSL service (resold by TalkTalk) or is she now on TalkTalk's unbundled link service? [You may not know the answer to this].
Is she on an up-to 8mbit service or up-to 20-something?
What the various router/interface status pages say - sometimes you need to drill down into more detailed screens by clicking on "more details" or "show stats".
There should be one that says stuff about ATM (or AAL5), link uptime, upstream/downstream noise margins, upstream/downstream carrier speeds ... copy it all here.
There should also be stuff that says what state "PPP" or "LCP" or "PPP-LCP" is in ... copy it all here.
Then there should be stuff about the IP configuration of the box - we don't care about the 192.168.x.y stuff for her local network, we care about the WAN or Internet interface. What IP address is she being allocated ... is it blank, 10.a.b.c or just four random-looking numbers? In any case, post it here.
I assume she has not got a static IP address as part of her service?
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Blonde in distress...
Is this the bit where I get my "This would never happen with an O2 Broadband customer " in
It does sound like an exchange card locked out or needing replaced
Cuban Gav
I take it that the engineer confirmed it was ok to the house?
TT should be able to remotely "take over" the line and test back into the exchange?
Robin
I would be very surprised if it was static IP.......and I'm too much of a gentleman to suggest why a girl might require static IP from her home

It would never happen if she were on O2.
I'm on it and never had a problem so far. Brilliant service, brilliant connection, brilliant router, brilliant price.

Re: Blonde in distress...
Will check up on all that Robin, she is coming home tomorrow and bringing her router with her for me to check out. She could not get on to the routers URL hard wired or I would have gone through all the settings with her. Know my way around and learnt more from you. Pretty sure she is on LLU with TT up to 8mbs the same as Ian on O2.
Would you mind if she called you at home tonight and and go through it direct? She is fairly clued up herself so could follow you through.
