Bernie sold out - F1 moving to sky
Re: Bernie sold out - F1 moving to sky
I'm not very happy about this, but, what can I do? So, how much is Skysports going to cost me then? (already have Sky, all be it the most basic package).

Looks like a similar situation for me as we currently have in Moto GP (ironically, almost in reverse) The Beeb commentary is so cringeworthy on that, that I actually don't watch it live and wait for the delayed Eurosport broadcast (which is at least the full race) with commentators that actually know something about the subject. I'll just be waiting for the Beeb highlights - hopefully it'll be for the money races anyway - like the middle east stuff that I don't really care about. As long as we get most of the classic races on the beeb...
Same here, there is no way they are getting any more money off me for Sports as the F1 would be the only thing I would watch.

Gutted
Hoped it was April 1st I was reading this. After a lifetime of having access to GP coverage (more or less - you know what I mean) it feels like your favourite sport has dumped you.
We don't have Sky, and have no intention of getting it. Ever. As others have said, this could spell the end for F1 commercially - the only beneficiary will be Bernie and his masters, certainly not the teams and their sponsors. I understand the viewing audiences for sports events on Sky are much smaller than terrestrial.
The Beeb's coverage has been superb too.

As a Beeb employee, I couldn't agree more!Shug wrote:Not as bad as it could have been, but still shyte of the highest order.
Although how many people moaning about this also moan about the cost of a TV license, or the budgets at the BBC? If there's one tax I actually don't mind, it's the TV license - the Beeb is a national treasure which we won't really appreciate until the idiots calling for license fees to be dropped get their way - which I think is sadly inevitable one day. Not just as a TV station, but as a resource which develops world class talent and skills.
But f*ckit, if it gives some sleazeball politician a ticket into government off the back of saving a few quid, what does that matter, eh? The reason the Beeb lost F1 is due to the massive government pressure to cut budgets, that's the sole reason. And it stinks.
Re: Bernie sold out - F1 moving to sky
I have Sky, but only thanks to a friend on here with a subscription that I could justify. However this ends in October, and my package would go up to £85. As I do not watch films, very little of the sports apart from golf and tennis majors, some comedy, and at the moment The Soprano repeat, I will not be renewing it.
I cringe every time I see that little twat being interviewed, but accept that he has done a lot for F1, and his wallet of course. The BBC has made a great job of the TV coverage, and we have got used to the hour leading up to it and the practice, which I am watching now, and qualifying. I remember how chuffed we were when it left ITV, but now it has gone backwards even more so.

Re: Bernie sold out - F1 moving to sky
I agree to a point Shug, but the poisoned dwarf was holding us (i.e. the beeb) to ransom. There was no reason to go to sky other than to line Bernie's pockets. No more people will watch F1 in the UK now that it has switched and it is likely to be quite the contrary. Advertisers will have less of an audience so i can't imagine them pushing the wee man to move the carnival to pay TV...Shug wrote: The reason the Beeb lost F1 is due to the massive government pressure to cut budgets, that's the sole reason. Aye - true. Valid point, but how much does the UK figure in the advertising split anyway? Would be interesting to see those figures. As much as Bernie is a d*ck, he'll have worked out the sums to ensure he gets the option that creates best profit, from all angles. Very valid point though.GregR wrote:I agree to a point Shug, but the poisoned dwarf was holding us (i.e. the beeb) to ransom. There was no reason to go to sky other than to line Bernie's pockets. Re: Bernie sold out - F1 moving to sky
So, if we still have (roughly) a race every fortnight, and the beeb are covering half of them, that equates to £8-£10 for me to watch one F1 race per month. Hmmm... that sucks.Scotty C wrote:think its £8 or £10 per month.Dominic wrote:I'm not very happy about this, but, what can I do? So, how much is Skysports going to cost me then? I guess we need to find some clever means to come up with an alternative solution. Find a website that streams it live,.. or something.

Or everyone just goes to Martin's because he gets it for free/having sold his soul to sky anyway?
Not impressed. But it has saved me upgrading the old CRT as I'd planned.

Re: Bernie sold out - F1 moving to sky
I guess we could go to the pub to watch it - what are the chances of it clashing with some ball-sport event though where the landlord/barm manager is reluctant to switch?
Really hacked off with this, my wee lad is really enjoying F1

Re: Bernie sold out - F1 moving to sky
I just checked on Sky website, it's £20.25 a month to upgrade to Sky Sports, I won't be upgrading. I was gutted to read this, this morning, oh well looks like 10 races a year for me.Dominic wrote:So, if we still have (roughly) a race every fortnight, and the beeb are covering half of them, that equates to £8-£10 for me to watch one F1 race per month. License fee was held at the same level was it not? So budget remains the same. They could have held onto it but the BBC decided they would rather spend the money on something else.
Just when the BBC had actually managed to get the presentation of the sport absolutely spot on.
Buggered if I am paying sky the money, I'll just watch it online via one of the streaming websites.
