Oil fires caused by the rads being totally destroyed. We simply don't see 200+ MPH impacts into concrete walls in F1, or they would exhibit similar behaviour, I'd expect. They were not fuel fires as Indycars burn Methanol, which burns clear.

Really sad to hear of Dan's death. Seemed like a really nice guy, totally down to earth. Shame on the British press for only taking an interest in him when it was his death they were reporting. From reading into it (not on that woeful Daily Hate report, I hasten to add, ghoulish and tasteless) it seems that there was a lot of concern about that event and what was going on. Hope Indycar learns a lesson and steps are taken to restore more respect for racing wheel-to-wheel at 200+ - its the only way that form of racing is viable.

Overall though, a sad loss of a great talent and genuinely nice guy. Thoughts are with his family. :(

I was looking at those photos and the video this morning, and with HD now they are crystal clear and detailed. I thought it was Dan's car that came across to the other side of the track engulfed in flames, but the4 driver threw his wheel away and was helped out.
It is even clearer as to what happened from the multi view cameras, but difficult to even count the number of cars that were on fire.

I just listened to an interview with Jody Schecter who was watching the race as his son Tom was in it.

Scheckter was a spectator at Sunday's Las Vegas Indy 300 and had an anxious wait before discovering son Tomas had escaped unharmed from the 15-car crash.

"I've wanted him to give up for a while," said Scheckter."
"Hopefully this will knock some sense into him and realise there is more to life. It really isn't worth it.
Asked whether the sport was safe, Scheckter told BBC Radio Berkshire: "No. It is the most dangerous form of motor racing at the moment.
"I think the set-up they put in so it can be more of a spectacle makes it very, very dangerous on circuits like this. Some others [circuits] aren't as bad."

Hits home most when you see the pics with his kids. Dangerous way to make a living, period. But no less sad to see those left behind. 34 Indy cars on a 1.5 mile oval? That's only a few hundred yards longer than Knockhill. Are they having a laugh. Not funny now, is it.
