The issue apple have with iOS is a base of people who "like apple stuff" and are scared to move.

As such they can't change the OS or business model too much otherwise their main user base will be alienated.

In the meantime the products get left behind as other companies make quantum leaps forward (although granted that's not happening as much now) If you think back to when Nokia used to be big, or even Blackberry i see it as similar.

Can't knock the profits they are making but i can only see it getting harder for them going forward.
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

Android is taking over the world.

"Gartner this week confirmed a recent report from IDC showing that Android-based devices accounted for 79% of all smartphones shipped in the second quarter of 2013."

"Apple’s market share, meanwhile, shrank year-over-year from 19% in Q2 2012 to 14% in Q2 2013 even though the company’s total iPhone shipments rose from 29 million to 32 million over the same period. "

Who said it was the best? There will never be agreement on what's best as everyone has different wants and needs.

Best selling smart phone for sure.

It just amazes me that when Apple launch a new phone there's this big world wide slagging off match that happens, picking holes in anything they can.
Unless I've missed something, this doesn't happen to Samsung, HTC, Sony etc.

I just find most of it puerile.
When Apple launch a new product it makes the news, therefore is discussed. And fanbois defend them (not accusing you of that). Other electronic companies just don't have the marketing might.
This, and the queues of geekoid types awaiting the next "new" product.

It's so sad, the folk seem to allow themselves to "follow the crowds" - I get numerous opportunities to slag of co-workers as offshore workers seem to generally fall i0nto this category, I even overheard a discussion during a muster about pre-ordering iPhone 5 ffs!

Any high end Android phone from Samsung / HTC or Google themselves (nexus 4).

If you sync your iphone with Gmail (ie gmail hosts your email, calendar and contacts) it's the easiest switch in the world. If you have everything on icloud then it's harder as you'll have to export them, then import into gmail. However it's not a massive issue and there are loads of tutorials online.

Mrs Donkey is the sort of person who'd rather throw something across the room in a rage then read a manual and she moved from iOS to android 1.5 years ago. The first week has some ups and downs but she wouldn't go back to iOS. People dismiss android as having too much customisation, so therefore it's too hard....but that's bollocks. The big manufacturers skin android to make it almost iOS easy to use. You don't need to customise it if you dont want to.

Watching mrs donkey use my ipad and get really annoyed that she can't just download that photo and send it via Gmail or upload to dropbox like she could on android highlights how far it's come.

Hear that? Sound of a nail being hit on the head.

Apple's stuff looks lovely and is really simple to use, as long as you're doing what they think you should be doing with the devices and services they support. You don't have to get too techy to come across a barrier to stop you doing something that should be straightforward - and on Android, 9 times out of 10 it now is.

They're not perfect, but then again neither is iOS as faultlessly stable as people seem to claim. End of the day, you're getting a device which is just as simple to use day-to-day, 95% as robust an OS, more flexible in how you use it - and it's much cheaper to buy than the iPhone.

I loved iPhone and iPad when they came out, but the game's moved on and they haven't - because Apple are far too protectionist over their formats and services. It's purely Apple's marketing and 'cool' factor that have kept them where they are in the public consciousness.

Like any OS you become familiar with it quickly. I have never purchased anything from Apple and never plan too. Android for me all the way.

I have an android phone for personal use and an Ipad I use for just surfing the web and using it for work (read PDFs, sign staff forms, expenses, work email etc)

In terms of phones, I doubt I would go back to an iphone but I miss the imessage thing on my phone as the majority of my friends/ family are on iOS so I find myself sending photos through my ipad. I know I can email them, but its not the same impact. Surfing the web was always easier on my iphone than it is on my android.

I'm still not convinced on the tablets for what I need it for. For work, I just found the android tablet too clunky and having to download multiple 'fixes' in the forms of apps to deal with file formats.

I HATE myself for owning an apple product, but remember the majority of you lot are geeks and want your phones to do a little more than make calls, send texts and surf facebook which id hazard a guess at maybe 80% of iphone owners use it for.

Is there not also security issues relating to android in comparison to iOS? Thought I heard Mr Boag going on about something a few weeks ago...

Why do you 'hate yourself' for owning an Apple product?
I don't get that at all.
