"Clarkson told The Sun newspaper that Hammond had smiled when Clarkson had insulted his driving skills." (At his bedside)

It's maybe not that relevant for us up in Scotland, but if anyone's interested there's a JustGiving page set up by Pistonheads.com to donate to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance who airlifted him to hospital.

I think it's a shame that as soon as there's an accident like this there's the inevitable blame game. He could just as easily have suffered the same injuries on his way to work in his own car. What he's doing for a job is no more risky than the men washing the windows on the skyscraper offices opposite me, or painting the Forth bridge, or flying an aeroplane.
The Daily Mail and ITV News THIS EVIL MUST BE STOPPED approach to journalism really hacks me off. Leave Top Gear, the producers, presenters, fast cars and fun alone, I say!

I was doing the Air Ambulance in the early '70s, before it was properly established as it is now.
The Thames Valley Police Force had just got their first Helicopter, but no Pilots, so I was detatched to them from Bristows Aberdeen to fly it and train their Observers. It also doubled as the first Air Ambulance.
As you say, to be well paid for that job, after leaving the Oman war, and to have nobody shooting at you, was great. The North Sea became a bit boring after the novelty wore of, especially after Oman, but tracking low lifes in stolen and speeding cars, and in between landing on Motorways etc to take RTA victims to Hospital, was what Helicopter flying is all about.

That sounds amazing!! Did you know that there is a company specialising in transferring very sick (mostly ITU head injury patients) from country to country and between hospitals in the UK. It's a private company chartered by the NHS and I am aware they are looking for pilots.
It sounds like you have some exciting stories to tell - would love to hear them sometime.
