You watch Moonshiners too?

Forget access, gym or cinema room?

I still have thoughts of a home cinema in our basement. If I could resist buying plastic cars it might be a reality

Basement is already converted. Two rooms same size as ground floor of the house. Only issue is the access is from the garden so you have to go out kitchen, down 5 steps then through door.

One has a full sized pool table, sofa and a TV in it. The other one has a bar with a tap, keg chiller etc., toilet and a load of room for table or sofas. Current owner uses it as a play room for the kids and uses the bar when they are having BBqs.

Don't move in until end of june but have option to cash in a policy and thought stairs into the basement would make it a more usable space and add some value.

Here's a sh*t pic of the pool room

Planning on using the room with pool table as a cinema room / second living room and the bar as a well bar... :D

Edit : Iain totally forgot about you! Sorry! Will be in touch :D

Why not build a little extension that allows you to go to the basement without going outside?

That might be a clever option, so you don't remove any of the floor area of your basement? I always think stairs take up a huge footprint for the job they have to do.

Was going to suggest a conservatory.

Be different, make a chute down into it! Or file mans pole haha. Much more fun than a staircase.

What about a lift? :damnfunny

I have a spiral staircase, it's not as space hungry as you would think.

12 steps dropping 2600mm between floors
Total width 2200mm
Depth from back wall upstairs 1300mm
2 steps protrude further into downstairs, so 1600mm from the back wall downstairs.

You are then left with loads of wall space upstairs where you could hang some cool stuff, then you still have a fair whack of the floor space below. That staircase is reasonably wide too, you could certainly save on the width by getting a tighter spiral

Does your house already have 2 floors? If so you will hit fire escape regulations if converting to over 3 floors.

Cellar has a back door, shouldn't be an issue I wouldn't have thought

DJ's right- there are a number of things in the Building Standards that could have an effect on cost or what's achievable. (Having a door out at the basement level doesn't necessarily help with fire regulations.) Drop me a line if you want any advice- too many unknowns to comment here...

Btw...is the basement accommodation legit? Any idea when it was done? Do the sellers have any paperwork for it? Questions for your solicitor...don't want to be inheriting someone's problems...
