I guess if you want a reliable 200bhp, it's one of the few ways to do it.

But if 160-180 is good enough, you may as well stick with the engine God gave it :-). And keep a few grand in the bank.

Having had both, 160bhp tuned K vs 220bhp honda, there is absolutely no contest in the driving experience, but no doubt its an expensive conversion

I think that's fair. And I think it also depends whether one is qualified to use all 220 of those horses. I know I'm not!

Depends on the car in question.... I certainly want to keep mine original, but then it's one of 35 sport135'99s, so modding it would be a poor show IMHO. If i had a tired plain S1, then I would probably be more tempted to modify it, to a point.

There is a certain irony in my approach: I don't want to modify mine too much as I feel it would detract from it's value as a 135, but I never plan to sell it, so what does it's value matter!?!?

Out of interest, is it possible to drop in a supercharged Toyota unit as an alternative? Would the costs be as high/more?

More - it's a totally different subframe and rear suspension on the back of the toyota cars. You'd essentially have to hack the car off at the back of the ally tub and replace just about everything aft. And you'd have an engine without the torque of the Honda - the Honda is 2lt and the Yota is still a 1.8.
