Rawsco, great post. This mirrors my approach if I've ever been out of contract and has never failed yet; be positive and be confident and you'll get what you deserve.

Bummer. You absolutely have to find yourself a job you want, and not wait for an agent to call. If an agent calls, you're going to take whatever they offer, because you're desperate. The odds of that job being something you want or in any way enjoy are minimal. If you find something yourself through door-knocking at companies you think you want to work for, you've got a much better chance of finding something that pays the bills without making you want to shoot yourself every day.

Best of luck!

James, if it is any help I am looking for a gardener/handyman, and I can pay at least minimum wage.

It's a crap situation to be in, I've been there when the recession first hit and all building projects kinda stopped, my wife was 6 months pregnant when I lost my job :( ... Thankfully my wife's uncle is a joiner and gave me a job labouring for a year and a half, just need to do what it takes to support the family! Then Andy G dragged my Arse out of the sh*t with an admin/data entry/marketing position which I also held for about a year and a half.... Whilest these were decent jobs neither were careers and I started to worry that after all that time out of a drawing office I would really struggle to get back into one.... Keep an eye on the market at all times, my ideal job became available, I applied and walked straight into my current position, 3 years on and loving it! At times it feels rubbish and things can get tough but there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

Stay positive, keep your chin up and ear to the ground! I hope things turn out OK for you and there is always the possibility you may not be made redundant! Good luck with everything.

Thanks for the support guys, (you never know Tut, might hold you to that if things don't improve). However, on advice from those on here, thanks to the wonders of LinkedIn I've got an interview on Monday. Effectively the same position I'm doing now but for a competitor company. If it goes well then I could start almost immediately as I have now requested voluntary redundancy (get's me the best financial deal) and negotiated a better exit package which effectively doubled my notice period and put me on full garden leave from today. Fingers crossed!

Cheers guys

Fantastic result.

I have a 2nd interview on Thursday. And a career change interview on Tuesday? Does anyone know where you get a jacket with leather elbow pads?

I've been out of work for 2-1/2 months now, having worked continuously as an engineer in oil & gas for 26 years. Fortunately I have no dependents however morale is at an all time low. Had one interview and was asked engineering text book questions on formulae that I might have known 6 months after graduating and had no hope of answering them (thats why we all have text books on our desks ffs). They gave no opportunity for me to show my experience, utterly hopeless. Fed up waiting for agents so might just try something completely different. To be honest there's that much crap on LinkedIn these days it seems a waste of time.

Sorry to hear that, but Don't lose hope. And don't rely on the agents. Most companies would now rather pay for linked in than pay commission to agents. I don't know exactly how it works but it basically gives recruiters the ability to search for pimple with xyz skills in this industry / city / area. So even if it looks sh*t from a user point of you id persevere. Make sure your profile is bang up to date, interesting and you've got a load of contacts. Get some endorsements too. Oh and finally join some industry groups and start contributing and sharing stuff. Sounds like a pile of wank but it's a lot less depressing than waiting for an agency to call.
