Hi Tut, I bought a pair of UV-5Rs. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06 ... UTF8&psc=1

They are not ready to use out of the box... bit of a faff to set them up, but once you get around the quirks the set up is fairly straightforward.

I'm sure Graeme will be able to give better advice, but here's mine:

In the menu, go to 28 (DEL CH) first and delete channels 1 to 16 first - the channels have to be clear of saved settings before you can use them.

The PhillipCooper link that Graeme sent steps you through it, only thing I'd add is - if you want to set to narrow band (menu item 5 W/N) and low power (menu item 2 TXP) which is recommended, you have to set this before you save your frequencies to memory as these settings are saved as part of the memory setting.

So before step 7 in the PhillipCooper guide, change these settings, then do step 7 (saving to memory) and these settings will be stored along with your frequency.

I also stored all 16 PMR frequencies, found on wikipedia, as most standard handsets seem to be 8 channel so I figured the other 8 frequencies may have less traffic on them.

Cheers, Paul.

Thanks Paul, what do you actually use yours for?

I went for the GT-3TP which was only a few quid more and had the 8W, but doubt if that will make any real difference, otherwise I think they are about identical to the 5R's.

Main purpose for me will be on snowboard holidays to keep in contact between the group. Will also be handy for driving days or MTBing rides if out with a group.

The "Chirp" program and a serial interface cable makes programming these a doddle. You can get all 16 PMR channels configured here if it's of use to anyone:

A word to the cautious - if you configure anything other than PMR frequencies (for example to listen to the Aberdeen Coastguard weather forecast) disable transmit capability.

I am Mac only and not sure if the software/hardware works with Apple.

It does work on Mac.

Install this first:

http://www.d-rats.com/download/OSX_Runt ... me_R10.pkg

Then get the CHIRP app:

http://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_d ... 14.app.zip

Then use the app to open the .img steve posted.

Back down south these days Tut, living in Boness. We moved back down from Wick just before Seb was born, a couple of years ago. Time flies!

As Graeme mentions, you should be able to get Chirp running on your mac. Do you have a programming cable for the radio? Mine is used once in a blue moon, so I don't mind popping it in the post for you to borrow, if it will do you some good.
