Couple of reasons I reckon, he realises that he is not as quick as Hamilton so is mostly going to come second next year, he is already wealthy, he does not have the No Fear win at any cost attitude so is avoiding injury.

Susie Wolff will be pulling out all the stops trying to convince Toto to give her the job tonight.

Guys

Don't want to start a war but someone quit his job - people do it all the time.

Why is it is newsworthy just because he drives quickly round in circles?

You could say exactly the same thing about 95% of the so called "news" these days so don't be too harsh on the fella. And remember, he can round circles both clockwise and anti-clockwise, so pretty special.

Because He's world champion and he doesn't drive round in circles fast, that's why he's retiring.

Are you sure that is correct Simon?

Does anybody really think that Hamilton would want Verstappen as a team mate?

I get the feeling he's relieved to be retiring. Becoming world champion should be an amazing experience but with all the problems he's had with Hamilton, the team and the fans at times I doubt he feels like that deep down. Next season would just be more of the same.

You can question his ability in races but he's proven he's quick in qualifying. Hamilton probably has the overall edge but it would still be a close fight if reliability was taken out of the equation. The media have questioned if he's a worthy world champ. Someone with a different outlook would have tried to prove themselves.

And so the driver merry go round will kick into action. I presume Mercedes would prefer it to be another German.

Would be good to see Jenson grab that seat, he and Hamilton seemed to work quite well together in the McLaren days and given all the changes it would be good to have the most experienced people you can get.
