WA Communities sounds like a great idea. I was one of those who did not support the various WA groups in the past as I felt that they were not inclusive to new members and were one long rambling thread that took a lot of time to unravel. The WA communities set up seems to address those issues, so appear to me to be a "no brainer".

Lets go for it. :thumbsup

Dougie's comment above regarding the Whiskey WA group is a great example of it not working in the past. Here's to an inclusive future :thumbsup

As a man of simple needs and advancing years, one place is all I can handle and WA seems to fit the requirement - I can use it while I'm driving too

FB is a soul-less white goods store, and this place can be the SE Wikipedia.

Love that vision for SE Wiki (Read-Only mode)

All for this, it would great to revitalise.

I'm not sure it's the use case for Whats App groups though. If there are limited numbers that we would have to work around m, that wouldn't be great.

A while back I suggested Discord and shared a structure I had built (in 20 minutes) in discord that mimicked the SE forum.

Here's an invite link. Not reviewed what I made back then but it's still there and it's not too shabby.

Discord is more designed for the use case of a forum and that's where many forums evolved to. It's also less 'mainstream' for the tinfoil hats.

I've set the invite to accept 100 uses (max). We can then renew it. But it should allow people to get on and have a look.

Only set this up as a proposal and shared with Campbell, but I do think now that the subject has come up, it's a good fit. And it's free!

Good stuff Ferg. I’ve been curious about Discord and it surely has potential.

What I’m unsure of is simplicity of access - presume folks will need another app? And another account? Non-gamers unlikely to have Discord. Whereas nearly everyone has WhatsApp

WA Community headcount limits are way higher than I think we’d ever need so don’t let that get in that way either.

Anyway let’s have a play with Discord. Thanks for teeing it up

Note that we can enable file uploads for small payment. If people think this has legs I'll work out what it be to have picture uploads. It's circa about £10 per month. I feel we'd need to picture posting.

If what's app is not restricted and we can have a structure and browse threads then I would tend to agree.

I note it's essentially a collection of groups. There's no threading

Size of a WhatsApp Community: A WhatsApp Community can consist of up to 50 groups, with each group accommodating up to 1,024 members

Yep. Limits ok but absence of threading may irritate I suppose.

Maybe we need a poll

I've just set up a profile, replied to your message Ferg and started a fresh thread - seems to work well!

It depends on what role you see SE fulfilling in the future?

I’m terrible for checking in on here, and tend to use SELOC for technical queries as it has more info. However, surely the USP for SE is that we’re all local, and so the focus should be on meets, events, lending a hand, etc. rather than an archive of information?

For that sort of thing, WhatsApp or Facebook chats are good as you can rapidly arrange things and it’s useful for quick updates.

I agree with the keep it simple and maybe discord is forcing a community in the same way phpbb does. What's resistance to using Facebook? I'd be totally happy with that. It has threading, but it's not really searchable medium. This is the issue with some pure social media solutions. They are fleeting by nature. Same reason WhatsApp is limited because things pass by if you are not in the chat.

For those who don't like FB, WhatsApp is Meta too. You could have an FB login and only use it for SE.

We have three options. Maybe need to summarise?

My thoughts are simply for a (re)connected community rather than an archive, TBH.

Agree ref SELOC for that.

Albeit there are some tech nuggets still to be found in here. Mostly the people

Thus my suggestion of WA Community. Keeps it simple but effective. Meantime the Discord trial is underway and I’d encourage everyone to login and have a play. We have always striven for a democracy

Now I've used discord for other groups, have to agree it's the right solution.
