Who or what first inspired u to get the Lotus...?
For me it was seeing a Black and Gold JPS Lotus Turbo Esprit in Glasgow when I was a student. If anyone had told me it cost $1 million I would have believed them, it just looked awesome. As soon as I got my 1st job (err, at 29
) I bought the 1st Turbo Esprit I saw advertised. It was in the small ads in the Dundee Courier!!
Despite the rashness of that it never missed a beat and I sold it 2 years later for exactly what I paid for it. When Wendy and I got together she was on her second MR2 and I was on my 3rd Fiat X1/9. The elise seemed a good compromise

TG magazine was my rag of choice as a schoolkid, and they raved about it. I then got given a Clarkson video (Apocalypse) wherein it was described as having handling, "more delicate than a quale's egg dipped in celery salt.... no its better than that!"
Went up to Mull to do Ben More, drove on the roads to Oban and thought they had been designed for a car like the Elise. Bought one the next month

Used to work with Campbell back on 97 or 98 but was interested in purchasing an Impreza Turbo at the time. Campbell kindly offered to take me up to a Subaru showroon in Aberfeldy in his Elise (any excuse for a blast). Had a really good day and promised myself if I ever got the chance I'd get an Elise. Since then I've had an MR2 T-bar and a Scoob before finally getting the Elise this year. First time I've been in a position to afford the Lotus and a second car for everyday use. Absolutely love it but regret that I didn't get one sooner.

[beware...this got longer and longer as I reviewed it, sorree!]
Around the time I left Uni, I was keen on the S2 Elan. They'd just launched the SE2 or whatever (essentially a runout model) but it was £25k or summat and way beyond my lowly means as a graduate programmer on £12k pa!! As it turns out, Lotus probably needed to charge a lot more than that for the cars, as they nearly sunk because of the losses.
In late 1996 I dropped by my Vx dealership in Aberdeen to get a couple of items for my then fairly new and much loved Tigra [if you have comments to make on this please start a different thread!!!]. Also happened to have a Lotus franchise at the time, and I caught sight of two vehicles in the corner of the lot - which I could only describe at the time as "alien fighter craft" ! I was intrigued and had to find out more. The Lotus badge was literally magnetic.
Like Robin, I too was given a seat in a customer car in the workshop and instantly felt like Nigel Mansell (he was pretty popular around early nineties if I recall!). I later dragged Lisa round to see them...she said "they are UGLY" (oh how she was mistaken...and admits that now, too!). I decided then that I had to get one, the salesman mentioned the sum of £20k "to get started" and I immediately budgeted £25k for the inevitable options list
A few months later, early 97 and I bought my brother a Knockhill "Race Driver Experience" for his 21st birthday. Naturally somebody had to join him, so I bought one for me too
First part was 6 laps in a racing XR2i for learning lines, feedback from instructors (Sasha was my guide...mmm, lovely!), then couple of demo laps on how (and how not) to do it from legendary Ian Forrest. Then 6 laps in Formula Firsts, essentially detuned Formula Fords. The closeness to the ground, the snickety gearshift, the engine growling behind your head were all new and exciting sensations, never to be felt again...or so I thought...
MMC had a customer car in for sale which was on condition they could use it for demos. I had just had a small pay rise which meant a savings plan could now be invoked to raise some further £5k to add to the value of the Tigra as a deposit...I said to Lisa "I am going to own one of these". I worked out a test route and blagged a 45 minute drive in the Inferno demo, with none other than Patrick Turnbull, now long since departed Murray for Toyota etc.
That feeling from the Formula First came back the instant I fired up the Elise. It was clonky and creaky (as an early car would be!) but I LOVED it and took it over some of my favourite local roads for a thorough workout. [Patrick never allowed a customer their own test route ever again, I believe!].
I started my savings plan early 97, paid my deposit in March 98, began surfing alt.cars.lotus shortly after, and stumbled across Robin, Del, Kelvin, Nick, Kevin Smart and several others from down south at which point Scottish Elises was born around April 1999, in the Star and Garter Hotel in Linlithgow! UJI turned up hot off the production line, on time, on 2nd July 1999 and I took out the biggest personal loan of my life to date - around £10k IIRC. I never looked back, I paid the loan within the planned 3 years, and felt proud on the day I could say the Elise truly was mine. It was a dream realised - even though I now recognise that £25k is nothing special to spend on a car these days
Again like Robin, I have had the course of my private, social, work and family life changed immeasurably as a result. It's good to be alive.

Footnote:
I just read the Evo Car of the Year article in the November issue. Their observations on the Elise S hark back to early views on the original 96 S1, which won Performance Car of the Year that year in fact. Whilst some lardy Ferrari won this year's, there is NO question that they all LOVE the Elise and I reckon deep down they all felt it was really a winner anyway! I found myself feeling proud to own such an iconic car which, in essence, has changed little in the 10 years since Tony Shute, Dave Minter and friends rolled it off the production line in Hethel with great apprehension as a make-or-break vehicle for Lotus. It's great to read mags like Evo, hear them rave about a car you'd normally only dream about, and then wake up and realise "I'VE GOT ONE! [and I ain't selling!]"

I think the dates you quoted are accurate in context, ie the heady days of when we worked together (probably about 97/98 through to around 2000). I reckon our outing to Aberfeldy was some time after Karen and Iain's wedding, when I got a shottie of your MR2 (nice). Lisa got her Scoob in Oct 99, which was the start of our connection to Bob Nottger at the now defunct King & Sons in Aberfeldy.

For me it was after buying a 1/18 Elise S1 model in '98 and then watching the 'Making of the Elise' on Discovery channel. Then I realised I could get an S1 for the same money as the Escort RS Cosworth I had promised myself for years so went down to Swindon and bought an S1 private. I nearly binned it twice coming off wet roundabouts on the way up the road and woke up the next day thinking 'what have I done , this thing is a death-trap'

In the summers when I was a kid, a Lotus Esprit used to turn up round the corner from my house every now and again. I knew nothing about cars, was about 10 years old, but just loved it. Asked what it was and decided that one day I would own a Lotus!
Was still in my teens when the Elise was launched. Didn't know much about it at first, but after seeing a couple in the street I was hooked. I thought they were simply beautiful . . . and still do!
I researched loads about it before I had even learned to drive. Even when I was passing my test and buying my first car, I had figured out my plan for getting an Elise. The plan was actually meant to take a lot longer . . . me and my mate had promised each other that I would own an Elise by the time I was 30 and he would own a TVR by the time he was 30. I beat him to it!
Was going to leave it a couple more years, but in July this year, was passing Phoenix Honda in Linwood where I bought my car at the time (Civic) from. Noticed a Blue S2 and a very good price and thought, what the hell, let's have a laugh, I'll just ask for a test drive. Had learned so much about the car, but had never actually driven one.
It was absolutely amazing and I almost bought it, but some damage to the rear clam (poor fibreglass repair and spray job) put me off. Also wasn't convinced about the practicality for a daily driver.
Thought I'd have a laugh by nipping up to MMC in Glasgow and driving what I knew was there last demo Elise. I knew they were getting rid of the Lotus dealership in Glasgow. I had no intention of buying the car. It was way out of my price range and I was supposed to be saving up for my first mortgage and buying my first house by the end of this year . . . .
. . . or so I thought . . .
On 5th August 2006 I picked up my 111R. The car sold itself! I just couldn't resist after driving it. The mortgage has been postponed a bit and I figured if I don't do it now, I'll never do it! Even if I just have fun for a year and then need to sell it, at least I've done it while I'm young (ish).
Discovered this forum during the week between signing for the car and picking it up. Have only owned the car and been on this forum for 4 months now, but have had the time of my life. Every single person I've met at meets/trackdays has been so nice and welcoming and I feel like I'm already starting to make some great friends.
This car is not just a car. It has become a hobby. I never thought I'd look back at over 3 months of my life and realise that I spent almost every weekend out driving!
At the moment, I'm back getting the train to work and it makes me appreciate the Elise even more. Every night when I get home and see it sitting in the driveway, it reminds me how bloody gorgeous the car is! And every time I get in the car at the weekends now, I appreciate it even more, having not driven it for a few days!

It was a neighbour of my parents that bought a yellow S1 new - at that point I was hooked!
He subsequently wrote it off - head on collision - overtaking on a hill
About a month later another identical one was delivered - he wrote that off by driving into the back of a Police T5 - lost his licence for a year for that stunt!
He now drives a mini!

I've always been a bit of a petrolhead and recall the launch of the elise in 96 when I was 24. At the time the asking price well out of my budget as I wasn't very good with money, something that still hasn't changed to this day.
I bummed about in crappy cars until Mandy & I went to the motorshow where the elise S2 was being shown. A breif chat with one of the guys from the factory followed and we both fell in love with the car. The were also doing a really good deal on their finance package at the time and Mandy & I were saving hard for our planned wedding in Mexico.
A day or two later Mandy's sister was involved in a series riding accident which saw her lay-ed up in hospital with multiple fractures to her pelvis which prevented her from flying (it also was a bit of a double whammy to the wedding plan as her husband was my best man).
So after much deliberation (about 20mins over dinner) Mandy & I decided that our hard earned savings and trading in of our current car would give us the deposit for an elise.
A test drive was hastily arranged during the Motorshow (a bit to hastily as it turned out) for the next day after the motorshow finished. Turned out that 5.30 on a weekday doesn't really suit an elise test drive and we turned up to be told as such by Graeme. Undettered I said all I wanted to know was that I could drive it at 30mph and that Mandy could reach the pedals
This was done and the rest is history - a cobalt blue S2 racetech, pre-ordered for the Motorshow arrived for collection 6 weeks later on the 14th December 2001
First contact with the SE community didn't really happen until the March/April of the following year mainly due to firewall problems. I was put on to Scottish Elises by two folk on the OLC BBS, folk by the name of IDW (now Zippy) and Tut.
Cheers

my favourite game for the commodore 64 was the lotus esprit turbo challenge, so always had a soft spot for Lotus since then.
Years later (last year), i was behind Stephen in Cathcart going to a BIFM conference. Thought it looked so cool and sounded great so got chatting to him about it. He convinced me about the price - alot less than i thought!
6 months later, i started to work for him and on the first day he picked me up to go to a client's site in it!
I Had never sat in one and trying to make an impression with a brand new 500 quid suit didn't really help me get my lanky 6'3" body into the car with the roof on.
Our site visit involved going over the well known MOD road between loch lomond and Helensburgh! WOW!
I then got a shot of it on that road on the way back! I did drive like a poof mind you!
So ever since then i had been hooked!
As Dave (RAG_IT) will tell you, after seeing SteveBanks car it just made matters worse for both of us seeing that slip through the fingers and my search intensified!
HAd my S1 111s for well over a month now and i absolutely love it.
Feeling more and more attached to it every weekend when it comes out of the garage! Roll on the summer!

Ross, difference is all your money isn't tied up in a property and the money you do have access to isn't goverend by SWMBO, meaning you could go and get the car you wanted!r055 wrote:As Dave (RAG_IT) will tell you, after seeing SteveBanks car it just made matters worse for both of us seeing that slip through the fingers and my search intensified!
I on the other hand just spend my weekend and lets face it, most nights plotting ways in which to try and convince her she doesnt want one big sports car like a 350z, why dont we just split the 20k and go for a 10k car each!
Anyway, good on you man, I will be back in the Lotus fold soon! I actually can't wait until i spend my life posting in the technical section!!!

Wasn't as easy as that mate - like Mac&Mandy, me and the Lynda were wedding planning and had booked the wedding for June 07 saving for well over a year. had to take a loan out in the end to make up the rest of the money i didnt have!!
I was trying to find out all sorts of scams and dodges to save money - managed to claw back 1k from the tax man though by claiming a rebate on expenses for last year.
anyway, hope you find one soon - it was starting to take my life over looking for one! God only knows how you are feeling as you've been lookin longer than me

ed took me to KH one day in his 111S and had a few laps. fecking loved it. back home on autotrader but didn't seriously think i could afford it, similar to ironside i guess. i'd seen the same vid GregR had, and had always hankered after an Elise. that was prob sept 05. then he got the exige in oct 05 and i went on a few runs.
feb 06 he let me drive the EF trackday in the exige
was pretty hooked already, but that was last nail in coffin. had new job by then so started looking seriously. prob did maybe 5 more trackdays in ed's car, then a B&C super 140 came on in Dumfries. Looked good. Went to see it with Shug and it turned out it was a bag of shi*e. Then thought stuff it i'll go down to sunderland and see an azure S1 i'd spotted a couple of weeks previous. Went straight down to meet the guy, drove it and loved it. Got home at 1.00am a happy boy. Went back three days later on train and drove it home.
Bought it 22nd may 06 and never plan to sell
thanks a lot bro.
and cheers to shug for telling me not to buy the 140
