I've used Edi Bike Co-op a few times, always been good, I bought my better half the girlie version of the one you put up the link to. The Girlie one's not much different, just a slightly shorter top tube. It's been pretty good, no problems, however if you were going for some of the more agreesive routes at Glentress then the front forks may be a touch weak, but for tracks/paths/roads without too many rocks or big drop offs it'll be perfect.

I had one very bad experience with EBC a couple of years ago. Put my Klein in to have the forks serviced before heading out for a biking holiday in Morzine. Picked the bike up the day before leaving, paid for the work, and didn't ride it before packing it up (not clever with hindsight). At the start of my first big day of riding in France I discovered the forks hadn't been touched and were still almost seized with mud  I was not impressed. Perhaps the guy running the bike co-op's service department has since moved to MMC :D

Know the feeling, bought a spare tyre off them for a French trip. Spoke to the guy and told him my bike etc and he had wood as he had been on a Trek training course blah blah he simply picked it up from their sales bucket and I bagged it for the trip.
Few kms out on a ride and need to change inner and tube and wrong size. Not a happy bunny. Own fault I guess.

Bought a bike through our bike to work scheme, which incedently only came about as our MD is into his bikes and decided for his Scottish trip that he needed a new one and wasn't paying the grand he wanted!

So we all got an invite into Gordon Brown's scheme and i kind of got a bit silly about the bike i wanted and ended up with a bike worth £850!

The bike to work scheme more or less wipes out 50% of the bike for you, and you pay the rest over 12 months!

I am paying £38 or something back every month for a bike worth plus accessories £1k

i do however cycle the 10 miles to work and back every day that the bridge isn't closed and feck me it gets you back in shape! Lost a bucket load before Xmas with 2.5 months riding 10 miles a day! Put most of it all back on over xmas though!

Here is the so called Hybrid bike i bought but bar the flat handle bars with added bar ends it is a road bike and awesome spec!

P.S Bikes depreciate worse than cars - work it out £850 to £729 in 5 months!

I set up the same scheme at my work then resigned and never got on it. Tats.

Well worth it before Brown takes it back like he did with the Home PC Initiative.

And as for depreciation... the airbus builds are sucking up all the carbon firbre in the world so was offered the same money for my bike by my shop a year later as the supply of Treks to the UK is much much lower than previous.

Is it the one you previously linked?
What's the deal with buying a new bike?
Can you not just go into the shop and say...

and load it into the back of the car?

I would be too sure, once most people see the main Glentress decent through spookey wood, they think "No Chance", once you get down the first time, you want another go, and it really is good. Best to learn some where a little less demanding though.

Edinburgh Bikes don't seem to be as good as they were a few years ago, but i've never had any problems with them. If you're in Glasgow, do try the two Alpine bikes shops (one at George Cross and one in the big Tiso shop) - very good.

If you want a decent off road worthy bike for a decent price it's well worth looking online - you can usually find some decent deals out there - but (as with sports cars) the cheapest time of year is the start of winter.

worth a look at the cheapest one on this page - Merlins bikes get great reviews

http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/acatalog/Sale_Bikes.html

but for generic bikes, specialised hardrocks / rockhoppers are pretty good for the money - and you can often find them cheap.

I always build my bikes from scratch, though. - always end up paying a bit more, but you get exactly what you want (i'm VERY fussy! - and love light weight!)

if you fancy building one, give me a shout - i've got all the tools etc you need, and it only takes a couple of hours once you've got all the bits

happy shopping

A.
