If you do want to try GPS data logging I just installed this on my Palm TX.

http://www.schlangmann.mynetcologne.de/HarrysLapTimer/

Seems to be very good, records all your times around a circuit, highest speeds, lateral g (dunno how accurate that is) all via gps. Tried it out between roundabouts in East Kilbride and it looked ace, if a bit geeky.

Wih a bluetooth GPS on the dash you could keep the Palm out of sight.

All for £9.56 (but I already had a Palm which runs Tom Tom).

I hears what yers sayings but it could be better to try and 'pass' yourself than to try and keep up with one of the masters.

I imagine if I tried to keep up with the likes of Simon, Ed, Tut etc.. I'd just end up in the tyre wall! :)

I wondered how long it would take for this thread to become a cock size competition ... sheesh.

Anyway, I didn't look at the link yet - GPS based logging good for averages, won't tell you zip about the details (only gets a fix once per second and those are out of phase lap after lap, so you won't get the Martin Brundle style "lost a tenth there" information).

I think video recording is actually a much better solution. First of all it gets you 40ms (4 hundredths in Brundle speak) sampling for free and secondly you get to see what was happening when the times were taken.

Of course ideal solution is video with speed, throttle, brake and lateral G overlaid. There are (expensive) solutions to this problem. I believe that cheaper solutions will be available in the coming year as the price of various important bits has dropped a lot in the last year.

Cheers,
Robin

I've got all of that stuff collected in the Cat - plus steering angle.

If only I knew how to work the system

(Ps: I can't believe Simon & Ed were mentioned in the same sentance as Tut! )

Agreed Robin, that would be the best from the point of view of saying, I lost time there, or I lost time there. All I want is the ability to say, "I was faster than I was last time!"

I didn't know this was a 1 second update kind've thing - that's the sort of comment I was looking for re. the 'disadvantage' of the machine.

Having heard what Pete's saying, sounds like there's a cheap option available :D Still... there's always blutack and an egg timer...

Personally, im flattered to be listed in the same sentence as tut. I certainly am no master and still have a shed load to learn. I sincerely doubt i will ever be good enough to be listed in that category but as long as i still enjoy it ill keep doing it! HTH cheers Ed :)

Last time I was in knockhill I kept checking I wasn't in reverse :)

I just think if I tried to keep up with someone who was a lot faster than me I might try toooo hard and end up going into a corner faster than my abilities allow.
