not a good week.......
Really sorry to hear this tut. I think the views so far have the right idea - he's basically okay, which is the main thing. I tw@tted 2 cars in a big way prior to getting the Elise - still convinced I was utterly dangerous before getting in this thing. I can only thank the slight bit of sense in my head for realising that the Elise is a bit more of a challenge and giving it some respect. I'm convinced that was the point I actually started learning to drive.
Hopefully, it'll have the right effect on him and he'll take the hint.

Thanks all, another great thing about Scottish Elisers is they are a like minded lot, and know how you feel.
As you say, the biggest worry is what could have happened to them, not the car write off. Having spoken to him now, I am hopeful that he has learnt from it, as he knows that it is his last chance.
Fortunately we can get a replacement car almost straight away. As part of my War Pension is the higher rate of Mobility Allowance, I am entitled to a Motability car. Before the wise asses start, that is a proper car, not an electric trolley type.
I can choose a car upto around £18K, and everything is included, insurance, tax, servicing, tyres, you just put in the fuel for three years and then they give you a new one. The new Ford Focus Ghia TDI 135hp is at the top of the bracket, so just ordered one of those after Verian decided on the colour. (Close to Azure blue.......)
That now means that I can use my second full no claims policy on N1 TUT, but I still have to decide if and when Ian gets back on the road, and in what.

Sorry to hear that tut, glad everyone is ok.
I failed my test first time around and genuinely believe that if I'd fluked a pass I would have been a total liability! Passed 2nd time in 97 and touch wood haven't yet had an accident. I have however been in enough scary accidents as a passenger to properly put me off having one of my own and most likely why I now drive like a granny in the wet!
Maybe make him buy and insure his own banger for a while and leave the shiny new Focus for him to aspire to once he's proven himself?

Wooohooo...
Now that makes me confident ..not..
Glad to hear everybody is ok and good to hear the car will be replaced in this relatively easy way
Now.. my oldest had her 18th birthday yesterday. And guess what she asked for?
I guess I'm not quite the right example owning a bunch of fast cars and being an example of politically incorrect driving, so I already was a little worried. This thread doesn't help
...then again... I don't think she (or Ian as a matter of fact) will start doing the things we saw from that biker who first overtook us while doing a wheely and then came back hooning in opposite direction ..on one wheel ..
well, maybe we just shouldn't tell them

My dad died (car accident) long before I had a licence so had no option to do it all alone, but at least you appreciate things more when you have to pay everything from your own pocket.The_Rossatron wrote:Maybe make him buy and insure his own banger for a while and leave the shiny new Focus for him to aspire to once he's proven himself?
Ouch, thats a tough break for your son tut.
Ross` idea of buying his own car is a good one; I saw many friends not appreciating what they had and writing off parents cars, something I am sure they would not do if they were piloting their own hard-earned around.
Like everyone I am glad him and his friend have come out unscathed, but hope it gives him a wakeup call.....

Another one from the 'i twatted a car and came out the other side' camp here - hopefully he'll take things on the chin and learn. IMO, what you don't want is to let him leave it too long before geting back behind the wheel - that could make him so timid its counter-productive: I waited a long time and am still not convinced I'm as confident as I was pre-prang.

Sorry to hear tut, glad hes ok!
I "swerved" for a cat once and crashed one of the farm landrovers 2 weeks after passing my test. The real reason for the crash was i was hungover, i farted, i laughed alot and Tom started punching me and i wasnt paying attention.
Im sure he has learnt his lesson as i certainly did.
Cheers Ed

Sorry to hear this Tut. Glad he's okay.
Good to see you've got him signed up for the IAM. I almost think there shouldn't be an "advanced" test and that they should try to get all new drivers up to IAM standard in their DSA test. I think it would help a lot.
Hopefully he'll have learned a major lesson for life through this and, as Greg says, I think the sooner he's back in a car the better. But perhaps with yourself or an IAM person alongside him for the first wee while til he gets back into the swing of it.

Hi Tut,
Glad to hear he's fine.
Plenty of good advice here so far. Like others I twatteda car early on (albeit not my fault - doesn't really help though) it defo made me think a lot more about my driving and those around me. Leave bigger braking distances, etc. Best deal is to get him back in a car soon, this you as PAX and hope he's learnt his lesson. Sounds like the shunt was big enough to give him some pause for thought. Here's hoping.

It gets even worse. The police are coming around on Wednesday to take a statement. Ian told Verian yesterday, but was trying to keep it from me, that on Wednesday, before the first accident, he went through a red light in Fraserburgh. Some lame assed excuse about a drunk trying to kick the car.
However a police car was crossing at the same time and nabbed him. Offered him 3 points and £60 or go to court. He took the former, but does not yet even have a licence to endorse.
The best thing now is that he loses his licence, and when he is old enough, sensible enough, and can buy his own car and arrange his own insurance, he may get back on the road again.
He has run out of options with me.
On the good side, the five day weather forecast shows Friday at Dunfermline and Ft William as being sunny intervals and 21 degs.
Yeah, OK, and I am going to win the lottery..........

Nightmare Tut...at least with the amount of hot water he is creating I'm sure he's not feeling so clever. Hope the cops give him a good scare but not too much else....
Sounds like in the long run it will be a good thing for them (insurance & legal implications aside)....IMHO it's the only way you appreciate how easily it can be done when you're still at the invincible stage.
Putting an airborne car through a wall certainly taught me a thing or two at that age....never been that stupid again.
Always wince now when I see youngsters tearing about at silly speed (and in far higher powered motors now).
F*** I sound like my old man

I agree that we have all been there, but he has gone completely over the top with that record inside three days of passing his test.
Not sure if I will even take him down to KH on Friday, but he will be here on Saturday, so hope that he has broad shoulders.
