I have recently replaced the pads with Pagid RS-14s and when moderate braking from about 40mph I get a real clattering sound and vibration through the pedal. The sound is a scraping sound and slows when slowing so I am certain is related to rotation. It seems to be coming from the front left and makes a real noise in the cabin, almost like a metal wire being used to saw through a metal sheet.

I am using Stu's grooved discs which have been on for about a year and only tracked once. They have probably covered around 5000 gentl road miles.

Any ideas (sorry for thread hijack)?

I would take the pads out again and have a look,if you are still having problems, give me a call, and pop round .I will have a look for you .

I am using stu's 'mutsnuts' ali belled disks all around and find them perfect.
even on the ring with my Audi speeds they take a lot of punishment and never had any problems with them ( Pagid 14's )

fronts lasted about 20.000 miles, so I'm happy :thumbsup
just replaced the front rotors, easy job

This is happening too often with Gearys disks, Cowan had his changed because of warping, and I had to send one back as well for warping, though it was replaced free of charge.

When I need to replace them, I will see what Stu has up his sleeve now.

I have the very thing up my sleeve, under development and production as we speek, and I have now sold out of the first batch already :D

Once i have some pics I will post up,but Muts Nuts will be back up soon, with lots of new stuff, and a range of service parts as well(Plug)

I would agree, the holes cause the rotors to crack.

Tut,I have sent you mail.

new Pagid 14's do give a funny sort vibration in the pedel,
that will cure itself after some abuse on track ( couple of 100's miles road/track and mine are fine again)

also some ticking when the pads move in the calipers (rotation dependent) is common (off brakes, disappears when braking), anti vibration sticky thingy's in the caliper (top and bottom side of the pads) cures this instantly; or wait more miles..... ;)

Can you send me your number? I am really worried about the racket these things make.

I drove in to work this am and the car judders a little when below about 10mph when lightly on the brake - ?warping of the front discs. I say this because the squeak with cold 14s is intermittent and rotational and times perfectly with the car juddering to a halt as if the stopping power of the pad-disc varies with each rotation of the wheel. The grinding noise described previously is only there when moderately on the brake slowing from around 40mph - not there when brake is stamped on or when just breaking lightly. However, most interestingly, it times perfectly with the rotational judder described above.

This is there even when the discs-pads are heated up and is not just rust deposit on the disc.

All of this is from the left side only.

Many thanks for the advice.

I have a cracked Geary disk in my collection also, only noticed it upon replacing them . . . I wouldn't run drilled disks any more, the holes act as stress raisers and allow cracks to propogate. Slotted or plain disks (like Stu's (which I use) or even EBC's are much less prone to this kind of problem. Probably also worth saying that a 4 hour session at KH will be just as bad if not worse on the brakes than a race weekend, depending on how you drive of course . . . It's heat/expansion/contraction cycles that ultimately cause the cracks to grow . . . so every heavy application followed by a straight is one cycle . . .

I can vouch for that  when I came in from my very first stint at KH, I did try to cool down, but people were approaching me with eyes like teacups saying my brakes were smoking like hell
