Whatever they've done, it's welcome - clearly they did call in BA to get the welding done quick like. I am looking forward to the close up that shows a bit of the A-team van welded across the crack :-)

Open ahead of schedule - how often does that happen?

Cheers,
Robin

It depends on the schedule communicated. ;-)

Breezed in today, literally. I pity the coppers in the full high vis standing on the hard shoulder to stop HGVs.

Well, good on them for getting it done ahead of the schedule which they shared with us....for all we know yesterday might have been the deadline all along

Perhaps they should only permit sub 1000kg vehicles.

Sorry S2 owners.

Forth Road Bridge - now in intensive care

Post by campbell » Wed Dec 23, 2015 10:02 am

Derek Mackay got a fair old grilling from Gary Robertson on Radio Scotland this morning. The former is a slippery sort, and it's a dangerous game they've played with partial reopening "ahead of schedule". Hauliers are spitting teeth. I think wee Deek should be standing with the coppers to explain to the happy truckers.

All the same, it's great progress and no question some lessons will be learned. You'd hope...

45 minutes extra in bed and still got to work 20 minutes earlier. Nice wee bonus for my last working day.

I'd imagine they've played us all and communicated a 'worst-case' reopening date and actually achieved the best case.

Don't blame them though, under-promise and over-deliver is always the better way.

My old man was the MD for a construction company. They took pride (as a commercial company) in completing work early. Thing is, councils / government would stipulate excessively long times to complete work. The private contractors could quote for the work, based on the labour involved in the council's time scale, but complete the project in 60% of the time, saving a big labour cost, and making more money for themselves. For resurfacing roads, My dad use to base costs for things on a team working at the rate for 600 metres per day, (that's lifting the old surface, re-laying the new, repainting etc). About 15 years ago, the councils issued some directive dictating that contractors were not to work at more than 200 metres per day per team.... suddenly things slow down, and prices go up. Local councils / government have a lot to answer for! If ever you see the council guys working on road projects, you will be amazed at how much time they take and how poor the workmanship is compared to private companies who have to make a profit. The council recently fixed a few broken patches on the pavements out side my office. The total area of the patches fixed would probably be less than 10m square. It took six guys, coming and going, three weeks to complete the work! Mostly they would turn up, stand about for an hour, then one would do a bit of work while five "supervised" followed by more standing about. Makes my blood boil TBH, such a waste of resources. Can't start to imagine the labour costs involved in that, for what should have been a total of a couple of hours work...... rant rant.....

Sweating their asset, they will run that bridge in to the ground until the new one opens. Although £5 says they dont let HGVs on it again which knackers the plans for the new bridge and which traffic goes where.

My recollection was that when the new brood operational the current one was going to be Public Transport only I.e. Buses and taxis

The forth road bridge was the first suspension bridge built after the above bridge collapsed

Hence it has a very deep stiff truss

Which some say has an influence in what failed to cause the bridge to close

Or for our SNP voters

The tory party made that bridge collapse in america
Landrover 90 = Muddy shed spec
Fiat panda = Couldn't care less spec
Landrover ?? = Muddy shrek spec
Unimog 404S = Very slow silly offroader spec
