So it is a toddlers timepiece?

Checked prices in HK / Singapore when we were away and the new price with the tax rebate and discount there was £4900ish. Didn't fancy risking it at customs so found this on chrono24 new second hand in London, with warranty card dated Oct 14. Thoroughly enjoyed peeling off the stickers.

Quality is fantastic and it is lovely on, size always put me off the DJ, but the II is ideal size.

If he's set on a Seiko, I'd look at spending £1200 on an MM300 - On my wish list, if I could ever afford such fripperies :P

Image

Similar amounts would snare a Sinn U1 - Another 'some day' watch for me...

If he's set on spending £3k, he might get a vintage sub for around that sort of price, after a good look through chrono24 / TZ / WuS etc..

(Also check out IWC's offerings - And some of the Porsche Design pieces, if he wants something a little less obvious.)

Recent addition - A cheapie (picked it up secondhand at 50% of RRP), but a little different and I quite like the simplicity of the face.

It's a Mondaine Swiss Railways watch - 40mm case, quartz movement - Came on a plain black ostrich strap, but I've stuck a Di Modell Rallye on it the other day for added bling.

Always liked thoise Mondaine's; very clean looking and that strap sets it off really well. Sinn U1 is a classic, probably even more so than the U2 which I still dearly miss :(

I fancy a 103 or 756 Diapal from them next.

Love that mondaine - especially on the rallye which is also a fav on mine (currently on a 80's seiko)

LOVE the Mondaine face, and I'd be tempted by 50% off... where did you get it Ross?

I've never bought one because they're quartz, the second hand doesn't sweep and the minute hand doesn't tick over. They're representative of the railway clock in looks only and have none of the characterful mechanism.

Still, it's a really really good look.

Also, never ever buy their wall clocks. £250 and seriously about a tenner's worth of cheap quartz mech and thin crappy case. Pure marketing. Sent it back, gutted.

eBay, secondhand job - Had set a 'saved search' up, and noted they tended to go for nearer to 50% of RRP - Think I paid about £68, which is probably what it's worth :P

Agree about the movement - I just like the aesthetic; they do a characterful mechanism with their "Stop2Go", which stops at 58 seconds for 2 seconds, and waits for the minute hand to jump forward.

Gimmicky, but quite 8)

Gimmicky my ass, that's excellent! 8)

Found the perfect solution... love the look, but don't quite want/need one, so bought one for Mrs F.

EDIT:

Even better, it runs 2 seconds fast per minute, so a second is actually 58/60ths of a second, then stops at the top, just like the rail clocks!

Just need a mechanical version of that with a sweeping second hand and I'd be very happy... not likely to happen though, as that's a very custom complication.

Hmmm, the Auto-mech Evo doesn't have stop2go, but is still surprisingly good value (especially compared to the quartz ones). That's an off-the-shelf, but decent quality movement for £400! If only it had a proper stop-to-go with the second and minute hands ticking over in sync.

There's no "perfect" Mondaine... yet, and given that the Evo uses a generic Sellita movement, I don't see them commissioning a mechanical version of the Stop2Go any time soon.

God, if I was wrong and they did... that would be an object of extreme desire!!

Tempting ;) But I think I'd use the timing bezel on the 103 more often than the 956's tachymeter though.... I am fickle though, so please feel free to post a photo of it :-D
