Couple of old skool arrivals over the past year.
First up, a Seiko 6309-7040 dating from May 1977...
I've long fancied a Seiko 6105 (the 'Captain Willard' watch that Martin Sheen wore in Apocalypse Now), but prices have rocketed over the past 5 - 10 years.
The 6309-7040 was the replacement for the 6105 and launched in 76/77, using a similar 'pillow style' case, but a cheaper non-hacking movement.
This one's a cheapy from the Far East, and as such, has been on the receiving end of the 'usual treatment' - Aftermarket dial / hands / bezel insert, and the case polished to within an inch of its life
Despite this, I like the look and it's comfortable to wear - I picked up a repro 6105 dial / set of hands / bezel insert / waffle strap, as well as a double dome sapphire, so might tweak it a bit more.
Secondly, we have a Desotos Chrono from 1976
I've wanted a 'birth year' watch for a while, and decided now was the time to buy before prices climb next year (they're a popular 40th birthday present).
Problem is, most 70's watches are tiny by today's standard - 35-36mm is common, and looks lost on your wrist. The 40mm + 70's watches seem to command a premium, possibly because of this?
The Porsche Design studio came up with a 40mm Chrono in the 70's, which was produced by Orfina - Who in turn sold cases to various private labels (As well as Heuer...) - They also produced watches on behalf of Porsche Design (PD), and sold some they labelled with their own Orfina brand. They were issued as a military watch by several countries, and have developed a decent following. (Bodie wore one in The Professionals TV show

)
Desotos were one of those 'private labels' - Can't find much about them now, so they obviously weren't a large concern. Everything is pretty much identical to the Orfina / PD watches, with the black PVD'd case (the first of its type) and Valjoux 7750 movement. (My one has a PD bracelet, but who knows if it's original?!)
