ETA. If you want to trial a seat before deciding, why not borrow ours for a while? I think I have a spare rack to fit it to as well...

And you can hire trailers at Loch Katrine. Can we come along too?!

Thanks Campbell. I have traditionally transported the bikes in the car with the back seats folded down, but if we are all going, to do that is now classified as bad parenting apparently, so will need to sort out some bike carrier system.

Lock Latrine is not a bad shout for a trial. Will prob give that a go.

There seems to be mixed reviews about the fixed seats on the back of the bike... (I guess everyone has an opinion on most things).

Graeme, they look like a good deal. Couple of things I was after (have been advised to go for) - a trailer that converts to a pram - giving flexibility if you cycle to a cafe / pub etc, suspension is worth having and enclosed wheels is a good safety measure,... apparently. Having said all that, the Halfords ones do appeal as they are cheaper than the options I had

Still need to give some thought to how we/ I would use it with regards to going on the road. I am happy cycling on the roads by myself (preferring quieter roads), but having been knocked off by a car last year, I would be more worried about the baby now.

I've got one of these;
http://www.weerideuk.co.uk/Weeride_classic.asp

With the little one being in front of you it's possible to talk to them as you cycle rather than have them shouting at your back! There's also the pad for them to lean on if they're getting tired instead of their head flopping about behind you.

My daughter loved it and used it until she was about 4 and the extra weight/lack of dads fitness combination stopped play.

Not sure I would cycle on the road with any form of baby carrier though (although I hate cycling on the road full stop  ).

Dom I have a rear bike seat here if you want to try it.
If you're not living on the edge you're wasting too much space!

I looked at those, and found loads of reviews saying they were rubbish because you bang your knees on them unless your ride with your knees apart, which is uncomfortable. Did you find that, or do you think it depends on the size of the bike, rider etc?

Probably does depend on the bike/rider combo.

I'm 5'11", and have a pretty bog standard mountain bike (Specialized Hardrock) and I find that I have to splay my legs slightly to avoid the seat but nothing that is excessively unnatural or uncomfortable.

I'm not sure if it would be better or worse with a taller rider/bigger bike to be honest.

The worst part about it is when your four-year-old decides that she is now old enough to steer. That doesn't normally end well......

campbell wrote:I recall our debate over lunch, Dom :-)

As you know, we held out til about 12 mths old then went for a bike seat. Had many miles of fun and adventure with each (and both, for a while...Eilidh always seemed to be on mine for some reason...!)

Not sure if you will get enough versatility out of a trailer?

Whilst we didn't ride masses on road with the seats, we were more confident to do so as the kids are up high, rigidly attached to you, and not creating a long poorly visible vehicle. Although you can always fit a flag :-)
That's hilarious, we got a bike trailer for exactly the same reasons!

The long vehicle is hyper visible on the road, car drivers do a double take and if you are worried fit a flag - but try it and you'll see what I mean.

My issue with seats was that if you fall then child falls, and falls a long way. In a trailer they are protected and if you fall they are fine. I fell a couple of times, on the road, and M was fine (except for being slightly puzzled, and laughing). Both falls were on ice on the school run when I shouldn't have been cycling. And all your kids pals will want a shot (which makes you cool Dad) and Dom is strong as an ox and will be bale to haul two 4 year olds.

Oh and you'll need a tag along, and you need to start looking now. The model you want is an "islabikes" tagalong. Setup an ebay search for one as they are rare (Isla doesn't make them anymore) but they are the best. Don't worry about the price, you'll get it back when you sell it.

And Dom, welcome to my world, you need a much bigger car. Multiplas are nice...
