Martin, Is there any way of getting F1 as a standalone without subs to other channels?
Not that they've announced at the moment. You can get chelsea tv etc as stand alone so it's been done before but no news as yet. My guess would be it won't change before march if at all. I'll keep my eyes open for you

So, the first weekend of F1 TV on Sky. My first thoughts; It's great to see Sky putting so much efforts into the channel and the sport. However, my concerns are slowly coming true; as far as I can see, they really don't have enough content to fill a dedicated channel. More over, do we really want to see a dedicated channel? I consider myself to be a fairly keen fan,.. probably above average level of enthusiasm for F1, but don't feel the need to watch hours upon hours of TV about F1, every other day.

It was good to see the show on Friday night (the new F1 show), but I did feel that it was lacking content, which was spread a bit too thinly to fill the excessively long 2 hour slot.... even Brundle and Hill seemed to be getting bored at times. The same content would easily fill a 1 hour show, especially if it was not dumbed down quite so much (although perhaps the dumbing down may be less as the season progresses and they work on the basis that the viewers are not all first timers).

This leads me to the length of the qualifying and race coverage programs. I was happy with the length of show the beeb did (and think I may well watch the live coverage that the beeb does), but I'm not sure the Sky coverage is going to be too long. From what I have seen so far, I am hoping that Sky don't just extend the show time, and pad it out with little extra quality content. I suppose we'll find out next weekend, but I have a horrible feeling that I'm going to be left disappointed with the quality of the content; despite the glitzy and gimmicky delivery.

Especially on the first show when there is no last race/ season update to fill out there show. Will wait and see what they do on their first race weekend but will probably do the same as you and watch the Beeb coverage when it's on.

I assume this is the same show us Freeview cheapskates are currently watching on PickTV?

Must say it's pretty dull and dry so far. Also irritated by, of all things, the sound levels. Ted Kravitz sounds like he's in a steel dustbin... why are they all shouting, even in the studio?? The studio bit is like Match of the Day. All feels like an advert to tempt non-subscribers

Switching it off. Glad I'm not a Rupert Murdoch supporter TBH...

Didn’t think it was all bad.

Remember when F1 went to ITV?

Aye, I thought the same – there's a level of class in the photography, the editing, the voice-overs, and even the graphical content of a well-produced BBC show that sets them apart from other broadcasters.

And this business of having the Sky presenter 'drag and drop' race footage onto their video app is way clunky, IMO...

Enjoyed the "Legends of F1" shows though – good for someone like myself who hasn't been into the sport for very long to hear some of the history direct from the horses' mouths :)

Jeesh a hard audience eh?

Dom the channel will be broadcasting Thu - Sun on race weekends and although i share your concerns about there being a lot of padding / repetition to fill the whole weekend no-one forces anyone to watch the whole thing all weekend. The point of the dedicated channel isn't to fill every single second with new stuff, but more to ensure that the hard core fans get their sport when they want, and not when it can be fitted in around other broadcasting. Remember there are already dedicated channels for Chelsea, Man U etc etc and they seem to work really well. Personally speaking i'll probably watch the same amount of pre / post race content as before and i don't imagine i'll be alone.

I didnt notice it dumbed down, but i do know that they are determined to get new viewers to the sport and give people more of a flavour behind the behind the scenes.

Those who know me well will know i'm not a die hard company man, and i don't just slavishly agree with everything they do - but i personally enjoyed the show and i cannot remember looking forward to a season more. Yes parts didn't work that well but it is early days :thumbsup

Right at the beginning, before the dedicated channel was announced, I questioned how Sky would fit F1 in with their already pretty full TV schedule, and what would take priority with different football series, golf holidays, cricket endurance races and (the BBCs favourite - and possibly the main reason all this has happened) Tennising.

They obviously though the same and launched a dedicated channel for it. I suppose they also realised that the average Jo (Winkelhock?) like me wouldn't care much about sports with bats, and wanted to set it apart - as well as making it easy to turn on and off for those with HD, rather than activating Sky Sports 1 / 2 / 3 at appropriate F1 times.

Do Sky do any other motorsports? A proper decent Motors TV would be a nice way for them to go..

I haven't watched any of the coverage so far, but the Beep / ITV coverage was always more dumbed down at the beginning of the season, so that may settle down.

Personally, for now anyway, I'll be with the beeb for HD coverage, and Sky for what the beeb doesn't have in SD at a friends..
Unless I get around to rotating the old Sky dish in my house around a little to see it can pick up German TV ;)
