Think I will take the plunge and invest in some winter tyres soon too, just need to work out what will fit and where to get them

Hectyre on the Clepington Rd are trustworthy and fairly priced.

Though maybe not so convenient on opening times..

Used to use them but their limited opening times can be a ball-ache

I now use kwik-fit on the Perth Rd having agreed on a fair price, and proximity to my home :thumbsup

Apperently Tay Tyres are good too (not to be confused with Tayside Tyres in Douglas - they are good for a laugh though, they wanted £36+VAT PER TYRE for a change over!

Last time I used Franks Auto Centre / Fast Fit as I needed it done on a Saturday..

Tayside Tyres used to be where I went for everything tyre-wise when Bill Powrie (snr & jnr) owned it - now it's just a branch of Kenway they're lacking in the personal touch - shame really.

m8 says ive managed 20 years without snow tyres - why now?

well, im thinking the roads are less well treated now, and my tyres are fatter.

I paid £98 a corner last winter including the steel wheels

Exactly. Cars are heavier, tyres are fatter, and the potholes seem to have got bigger.

Phil I'm guessing you're asking about fitting charges?
If so I'd say £10/corner is fair, to allow for valve & balancing.
My Kwik Fit deal is better than that

Indeed - my old Mini was brilliant, even when upgrading to bigger wheels with 165/70R10 tyres 8) the only limiting factor was the sump clearance

And around the same time (around 22yrs ago  ) a girfriend had a 1.0 polo (old breadvan shape with sh1t brakes) with 145 tyres and plenty ground clearance - with new remoulds on the front it was amazing in the snow

I need new tyres all around on the MINI...was thinking spare set of wheels etc but as they are all due for replacement and we'll probably chop in the MINcer in the spring was going to put them on the standard alloys (might be a bit more expensive as they are 16").

Mytyres doing Nankang Snow SV-2's for 55 a corner...won't be as good as Conti Winter Contacts but 1/3 the price and will still be better than good summer tyres in just cold and damp.

Edited to add:
out of interest I checked prices for the 370Z...full set of winter tyres is over £1500 (and would also need wheels).
Think it'll just keep the 2-11 company in the garage when it snows...

Ali - that's my plan - even mine being 18s aren't that much more than 16s (not enough more even to justify buying steels) and will replace with summers (which need replacing soon anyways) come springtime :thumbsup

£55 is cheap, even second hand would be about £30 each.

I just picked these up yesterday from a guy in Kingseat for the Girlfriends Cooper S:

Refurbished 17's with 205/45 Vredestein Wintracs, used only last winter with 7.5mm / 6mm tread remaining.

I was pricing up 15 inch tyres and steelies but when these appeared I snapped them up at £550 :thumbsup

Those Vredesteins are superb tyres.

I've been pricing proper off road tyres for the M-Class - 19inch. eek. It's scary stuff.
