For correct display on the web, the image needs to be "Converted" (as opposed to Assigned") to sRGB.

Think of the web just like another printing device only, rather than you seeing a print from it, you are seeing a display. Just like any other device, such as a printer, projector etc at the end of the line, the image needs to be the right profile for a correct rendition and the correct profile for the web is sRGB. For the web, it doesn't matter if the image has the profile tag stripped from it, as long as it has been correctly converted to sRGB it will appear the way you intended it to.

If you post an image to the web that has been rendered with a profile of Adobe RGB (1998), it will look flat and lacking in saturation and contrast.

So it is best to shoot in Adobe (as it has a much wider colour range than sRGB) and then convert to sRGB for display on the web.

oh, most compact cameras will only shoot in sRGB (sh*teRGB as it is known amongst pro's)

Hi Gary

Like your landscape

The scale on the lens is what I used to use when doing jobs in the Navy if I was'nt able to pre focus on something (Water very hard to focus on  ). That was fine for SLR cameras with scales on the lenses but often we had to use larger format cameras with no such scales.

A good example was at Faslane where they wanted shots of Submarines as close as possible, going as fast as possible, with the mountains in the background in focus.

The cameras we used were normally Mamiya C330 twin lens reflex cameras which only had a distance scale at the side of the camera so we actually had to work out the Hyperfocal distance using a formula. We had to use a medium telephoto launch to put a bit of distance between ourselves in the Police launch and the fast approaching Submarine.

Using a telephoto lens gives you less depth of field (the distance between the nearest thing in focus and the furthest away thing in focus) so that didn't help matters and plus because we were on a boat traveling at speed we had to use higher shutter speeds to avoid camera shake which meant that you couldn't use high F numbers such as F22 to give you more depth of field. Its a wonder we ever got anything at times considering the dull weather as well.

Here is one example - must colour it in sometime

Cool pic! Would be fun to muck about with it in photoshop and make it look like a tropical invasion :)

Costco!?!? I can't decide whether you are taking the piss or not?

I use a professional lab for everything (apart from passport photos, I do them in house on ink-jet)

I was being serious, however I was expecting the answer you gave me!!! When you say a pro lab, do you run your own lab or send your files off?

I am not joking when I say I am a complete noob :) My friend does wedding photography and gets all his prints at Costco. He is semi-pro.

I send everything of to a lab, they have the equipment (some of it worth more than my house) and expertise to produce professional results.

Allot of photographers now do there own stuff in house, personally I feel that I don't have the time and would rather pay someone else. I'm a photographer, not a printer :D

However, a lab is only as good as the staff and the colour management practises they have in place, there are some terrible 'pro' labs out there!

For printing try Photobox at photobox.co.uk

Use them a lot, cheap and good quality!

You can profile the images for their printers if you
are shooting in AdobeRGB, but they seem to deal
with the sRGB stuff pretty well.

As David says, it takes a lot of time and effort to print yourself
but it can be rewarding. I've got an Epson R1800
which can produce super colour glossy prints that remind
me of Cibachrome prints!
Yellow S2 Race Tech
Black Renault Trafic (with LPG conversion)
