Couldn't face that bill for an Eliseryallm wrote: for me a new Elise SC with sport suspension and sticky tyres (both available as a factory option) would be the ultimate factory Elise, albeit at a price.

Shame they don't offer an ecu upgrade to 270 - that would be worth having - and the Exige's PPS pack - shame also they don't want to make a stripped out version.

Both 135 and 135R are the very same engine conversion. Only difference is that the 135 was dealer fit whereas the 135R was fitted at the end of the production line (i.e. after the 118 engine was fitted).
The HGF no doubt down to fitting procedures and quality of materials used on top of the standard HGF risk.
The 135R does have a special map for the ECU, as opposed to the Sport 135 upgrades that leave ECU standard (unless of course they just flash the new map at the dealers when they fit the upgrade).
You have to remember that they are all basically the same car, and sometimes the variance between a good one and a bad one is as much as the difference between models
Cheers,
Robin

It took ages to get there but the Sport 135 upgrade to the standard Elise S2 was finally announced on the 3rd January 2002. Initially only available on a limited number of new cars as a non-homologated upgrade. It features a ported cylinder head, the cast aluminium inlet system, introduced a stainless steel sports silencer and reprogrammed ECM to increase the power. A low restriction airbox has also been added to ensure that maximum revs can be achieved in each gear. The 135 upgrade kit gives the Elise 135hp at 6200 rpm and 175Nm of torque at 4850 rpm, 0-62 mph in 5.4 secs, 0-100 mph in 14.9 secs and a maximum speed of 129 mph.
For a limited period only, Lotus offered this kit to new buyers for £995. This was a loss leader for Lotus to increase sales over the winter months. Normal retail price at launch was £1750 which includes a sports exhaust and fitting. The reason the factory fitted price is so much cheaper than the aftermarket option is that Lotus can recycle the new but replaced cyclinder head removed from the car.

Not that it matters - just geek talk anyway

In fairness Mark, I think it was about the only way they could legally offer to sell the cars in that spec...and they'd been playing about with this kind of thing since the S1 Sport 190 or Sport 160 (a geek will be along in a mo to keep me right).ryallm wrote:Only Lotus could come up with such a convoluted way of building a car, and it meant I had to insure the car so it could be registered in my name and then converted about a month before it was even delivered to MMC. Barking!

Let's face it, it has meant some great spin off limited editions and enabled Lotus to issue the odd timely press release to help keep themselves in business
[although I can understand your astonishment at the "procedure" you had to follow to get yours!...worth it I'm sure though]

Yup, to keep the type approval for the elise, the mods had to be done after the car was sold, as an upgrade. If they were done before the car was sold, it would effectivly be classified as a new model and lotus would have to go through the approval process all over again.

Is this why my S1 135 Sport was SVA? Presumably they hadn't thought of the above method in 98/99?steve_weegie wrote:Yup, to keep the type approval for the elise, the mods had to be done after the car was sold, as an upgrade. As a note of interest my V5 states:
"SVA cert issued 01 01 0199 Emission Limit - %CO 0.5; 0.3FI HC 0.02FI: Lambda 0.97-1.03"
Never really sure what that meant. I did half wonder if it meant that the car could be run without a cat legally.

When I asked Fife Auto centre about it, he plugged the info into his computer and said my car didnt need the full enissions test. So possibly so... either that or he is just as much of a petrol head as me and thought, sod that I aint fitting a CAT just to take it off again.Stewart wrote:Is this why my S1 135 Sport was SVA?
