Still going strong and producing beautiful sound, and as I have a large record collection from the same period, the Linn Sondek LP12 is still well used, and having just Googled on it, is still in production as their top model.

My bet is that you have your Linn arm mated to a hand made kOETSU RED T phono cartridge with gold stylus.........a snip at £1499!!!

Last time time i was in Loud and Clear they were very high end as per Stereo Stereo.
I certainly found it to be a different experience as they were the only guys that listened to my budget and listened to what I wanted out of the system. Cerainly not a major high end spend for my home cinema setup. One of the few places that did listen in Edinburgh
Another thing to bear in mind is that if you go for shelf mounted speakers and stands then this can come close to costing as much as floor standing units.

I bought all Quad 30 years ago, 405 amp, 304 pre-amp, and ELS 63 speakers, but one channel of the amp packed up yesterday when I was playing Christmas Sinatra.

Unfortunately I could not justify or afford a Koetsu cartridge Iain, so had to make do with a Goldring 1042.
Still bloody good, though when you have tinnitus and blown up eardrums, a sewing needle would probably do the job.

spotted something novel in this month's evo - a valve driven Ipod dock. Apparently the valves pander to the audiophiles out there... surely not ... the amp and speakers only costs £299!

Now that's pretty damn geeky! Valves make nice room heaters

Hmm, that's very cool
You could do a lot worse than to pick one of them up without speakers, then spend a few hundred notes on some nice bookshelf jobs with stands... Would give you a cool system to start with and some nice speakers if you ever wanted to go the whole hifi hog, so to speak!
I like the way that you can plug in your TV or an external CD source too - good deal for the cash
