Another supposed weakness is the gearbox, and guess how much to replace?

Difficulty there is convincing the Mrs that it is just as 'safe' a car - quattro did a great job of that with my RS4/6 perusasion
Ferrari 458
Porsche 993 C2
Disco V

The quattro gives a fantastic feeling of security in crap weather (I'm sure the Autosport guys - Dave, Jason & Stu will vouch for that, what with the atrocious condition we drove thru, even on borderline rear tyres
)
This was a factor when choosing as a family car
One thing to note - a lesser quattro such as a 2.8 Avant A4 or A6 will do just a good a job (how often would you really "need" monster acceleration at insane speeds?), but with far lesser running expenditure, but nevertheless the RS6 has fantastic kudos

I used to have an A4 2.5 TDi Quattro sport. Chipped from 180 to 220bhp.
Awesome car.
Not quite as fast as my 330d now, but in the rain, it's so safe!
It's very difficult to get the back end out in a corner - even with the traction off!.
I dare say an RS6 is a different game of soldiers having more power.....
It was also a very good towing car.
wee piccie from the archives.......

Two negatives make a positive but only in Scotland do two positives make a negative - 'Aye right.'
S2 Exige
BMW 435d M Sport - 375bhp..... and stops now (big brakes!
)
Work Horse - Ford Transit - Full of crap spec....... 170bhp one

Dunno ref S4s (Krishnan's uncle has a V8 one so may be able to advise) but the S6s will still be pricey - 340bhp V8 - effectively the RS6 without the twin turbos... they do have the nice recaro seats & wider arches etc tho
Didn't Sanjoy look at one a while back?

Just after i wrote off the A4 off (above one)
I bought a 1.8T Quattro Sport 190bhp (petrol obviously)
Driving slow i got 22 mpg.
When i was towing........
Down the M74, crawler lane, up the steep hill.
Hit the gas, floored it
70mph, towing the BJ Minno with Westfield on it......
12 MPG!
The Quattro system does eat the fuel.
The 2.5 TDI got on average 28mpg (33 long run)
sold it not long after that..... crossed to the dark side & bought the 330d
David
PS - Why are we talking about fuel consumption on a tyres thread?
