The average annual Nortbound traffic is now around 15 million vehicles, so averaging around £1 for cars, lorries, buses, that is a loss of £15 million per annum.

No more Forth/Tay bridge tolls
Remember that saga. And the PFI schools/hospitals/etc seem just as bonkers a deal for the tax payer.Tom wrote:Anyone remember the Skye bridge saga a few years ago.? The government let a private company build the bridge (i believe whilst also giving them a grant for it - kind of public/private thing meaning they won't have to fund it fully). Then the company charges £5 odd each way, justifying it by saying that that was what the ferry had cost. Eventually, the company had earnt back three times the money they spent on it. By this point people were barricading the bridge in protest. So, the government decided to "do the right thing" and bought it back off the private company for more than it cost to build, and it is now free. Now if that's not a genius way to spend the taxpayer's money then i don't know what is....
Just had a wee read on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forth_Road_Bridge and it states build cost was £19M. Looks good value when it has cost them £4M to build the booths and another £1M to remove them! (I do realise that in today's money that would be much more than £19M)
I came home over the the Tay Road Bridge tonight and see that they have already converted the southbound slip onto the bridge from two lanes to one with a set of lights just before you get to the booths. I get the impression that the lights will only be for controlling traffic as an exception - at least I hope that's the case.

I can't beleive they are going to remove the toll booths right away after all the money they spent on them.
I am glad they r getting rid of the tolls altho I'm a fifer who works on Edinburgh so I would say that but as the upkeep of all the other bridges in the country is paid for by tax payers I don't c why the forth and Tay should be any different.
I don't see it making any difference to the qs tho there will still be several lanes merging in to two to get over the bridge afterall but it will save me over a fiver every week so I'll not be complaining.
