I think Graeme is really onto something here,

if you decide to buy the Passat, run it, see how you get on, my bet is you will get a bit more off the price leaving some cash to tidy it up a bit, if its a good car to you and you are seeing a huge MPG difference keep it and punt the A4,

then maybe by then you will have been able to get a bit more cash together for something fun or just a bit more you,

the Passat is a fairly mundane car but should tick the boxes, less than 200 quid a year in tax, 40-50 mpg, cheap to insure, and with the cash that's been spend on it over the last 2 years it should be very sound.

let me know if you are coming up for it we can get a catch up.
I'll be landing in ABZ at 20.08, the guy is collecting me at the train station... feeling nervous now I've commited to buy :?

It's a glazing company car for dropping canvasers off here there and everywhere, changed as the needed more seats so he bought a Vito.. To be honest at the price I'm paying it couldwell have been a taxi lol but a tonne of reciepts for absolutely everything being replaced in the last 2 years, the car as it stands will be lucky to have 30K miles on it..... I can always sell it on for a decent profit if I don't like it ;) and then I can buy a black megane 225 lol

I actually think I like this car, good spec and rare colour..

Subaru Legacy 2.5 or 3l in SE trim are good runners, boxer engine is nice with mild fruity exhaust fitted. 4 wheel drive for winter and decent handling for load lugging estate. I've had 2 in the past and now running an Outback for ground clearance and trailer pulling.

Only real negative is spares can be pricey so always have to shop around.

If you stretch the budget you could pick some early high miler diesel engined ones which will compete at 45-50mpg.

Hardly quadruple, yes double, but a few diesel variants with 100k have popped up for £5500 darn sarth regularly. I've been waiting to pounce on one vs. able to travel etc. :D

Two negatives make a positive but only in Scotland do two positives make a negative - 'Aye right.'

Prefer a 320D Coupe M-sport, readily available at that cash with similar or less miles :)

That said, I did eventually plunge for the 2005 VW Passat 140 tdi Sport and I got it at a steal  I just got 59MPG on the way into work with it  Car is silky smooth, drove to Carlisle on Saturday to meet my brother and his 2007 C-Class CDi sounds agricultural in comparrison :thumbsup

It has a few niggles I'd like to sort but hey ho, at the cash I paid I can have all fixed and still have cash to play with
Flywheel has the start of a knock...
Hot starting can take a few turns.
Paintwork needs a good polish and touching up in places.

Other than that, she's a minter lol

BIG Thanks for Clarky who joined me on the entrepid jouney of buying this shed lol.... and what a jouney it was hahahahahahaha  That's a story for another day! :blackeye

:cheers

Hot starting problem is a leaky diesel injector.
Well that was the case with my 330d when I had it.
